I'm in an office with 3 other people and we are trying to setup BCM to use
the shared database of contacts. I have installed it on the workstations
fine, but when I get to the server, it installs all the way until the last
few seconds and it then rolls back without giving an error message. I have
installed Outlook with no problems. It is going on to Wondows Server 2000
machine.
Does anyone have any ideas on what I can try? I've tried the v2 install with
the same results.

Do you have SQL server already installed on the server? If so Setup may
be failing to install MSDE because some the the sql files are already
installed, but a slightly different version (e.g. different service
packs).

If you have sql installed and are not using it, you could uninstall sql
and try again.

There's also an install log generated that you examine, but I don't
know off the top of my head what dir it gets written to.

When the system starts up it says it is Server 2000. When I go in to System
Properties it says it is windows 2000 SP4. The network was setup prior to my
arrival 6 years ago and the one who did that has moved away from the area so
I am on my own. I'm not as familiar with the network processes so am trying
to be very careful not to disrupt how the system currently works. I do know
the email is handled offsite.
Does any of this make sense?

Make sure you run all the windowsupdates and officeupdates after installing
MS Office 2003.

My install failed becuase I was installing over a remote desktop connection.

I then went to the server, uninstalled BCM and MSDE using control panel.
Deleted the folder \ProgramFiles\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL$MICROSOFTSMLBIZ
and did a reboot. Ran the Outlook 2003 BCM UPDATE, selected the check box at
the end to check for update. Ran office update again. Rebooted (I think...I
lost count of the reboots).
Opened Outlook, created a database.

Did the same thing on the client pcs. and they connected. Although...I have
seen more error reports generated and one laptop kept looping....start
outlook, config bcm, error, gen report, close outlook,...repeat
a reboot fixed that. Not sure why but it became confused.

I think most of the headache with BCM is with MSDE. There is no explanation

Thank you Stormin Norm. I will give this a try this week. My trial is about
up and I want to see if it will do what it says so I can buy the software and
start to migrate the applications.

Luther you are the BEST! What a great document with a TON of MSDE links. Now
I'm dangerous ;)
Thanks for helping all of us BCM newbies out!
