Does anyone know of a USA source of the BCI-7 cartridges for use in
the Canon IP5000?

Hi Ray

The Canon iP5000 doesn't use BCI-7 cartridges, it uses:

Canon BCI3EBK Black Inkjet Ink Tank
Canon BCI6BK Black Inkjet Ink Tank
Canon BCI6C Cyan Inkjet Ink Tank
Canon BCI6M Magenta Inkjet Ink Tank
Canon BCI6Y Yellow Inkjet Ink Tank

The Japanese models take the Chromalife100 bci-7, which just so happen
to be the same model with just a bit flipped.I believe Ray wants
chromalife100 ink for his ip5000 which would be bci-7. Either that or
he has a Japanese model which is set to take the bci-7 ink.

The following models are set for bci-7s
PIXUSiP8600ã€PIXUSiP8100ã€PIXUSiP7100ã€PIXUSiP6100Dã€PIXUSiP4100ã€PIXUSiP4100Rã€PIXUSiP3100ã€*PIXUSMP900ã€PIXUSMP770ã€PIXUSMP790

Note that I'm not sure on the mp900, it's what amazon.co.jp says so i'm
quoting it.

I know of no US resources for bci-7, only that they exist on
amazon.co.jp
http://www.amazon.co.jp/gp/product/B000BN15SC/250-1516892-3404213?v=glance&n=3210981
The handy dandy 4 pack is 3,340.00 yen or USD$29.40. It looks like
singles can be had for as low as 620 yen usd$5.45.

The IP5000 can be programmed to think it is in Japan and use the BCI7
cartridges. I want the longer life of the new ink. Yes I am looking
for a US source. That looks like a good price but I don't speak the
language so it is hard for me to read much on that page. Thanks for
the reply.

It's just as well, if you click on "display this page in english" it
says they won't sell them to people outside of Japan. My information
on ordering from Amazon.co.jp is clearly out of date, you could do it
months ago but clearly no longer.

But here's the thing.... no distributor would sell these cartridges
officaly for fear of losing their contract with Canon. Really the only
way to get them, now that Amazon no longer sell them overseas, is buy
mail ordering them from someone or some company willing to ship
overseas. Fortunatly the cost is low enough that when you take the
cost of shipping into account the cost is somewhat equal to a good
price at costco for bci-6, but unfortunatly the demand is low for the
very same reason.

The only way I'm aware of in the states to get the chromalife100 ink is
in the cli-8 cartridges, which while a bci-6 won't fit in a new
printer, the reverse might not be true. I'm too lazy to pull my
cartridges at the moment and see this, but you can find out your self
for only $14.00 at office depot.

The alternatives are as follows.

1. Hitting a Japanese price search engine, finding stores which carry
it, and ask in e-mail if they ship overseas.
http://www.coneco.net/speclist.asp?...&CATEGORY3=15&FREE_WORD=BCI-7&SPEC=1&AUCTION=

2. Hitting e-bay and finding friendly folks over in Japan or Asia and
asking if they will sell them to you.

I could be wrong, but this info is comming from someone who's activly
looked for this information.

Interesting. Can this reprogramming be done with other model such as
the 3000US for the 3100Jap or 4000US for the 4100Jap? Even though
Canon dealers might not sell the ink outside of Japan, are there not
plenty of 3rd party inks for these models as well? Perhaps the longer
life that you desire is somewhat applicable to generics as well?

You certainly are able to do that, but I don't have my ip3000 so I
can't test to see exactly what pitfalls you'll encounter. The button
presses would be identical for the ip3000/4000/5000/6000D/8500 so
that's not an issue.

As far as getting longer life aftermarket ink, well this may or may not
be true. I know with Image Specalists they offer a different magenta
but the same dye ink for the other colors, though I can't remember if
black is identical. But you should if you so desire use cli8s in your
bci-6 printer according to others. I've never tried it but you can
always try picking up a cli-8 magenta just for laughs.

The problem is that I have yet to see an aftermarket ink that has
longevity even close to Canon.
