Does anyone know how to set up the batch scanning software on the
Dimage Scan Elite 5400 II to scan only a 4 frame strip in the 6 frame
negative holder?

An earlier post mentioned a wizard on another Dimage scanner, but I
can't find one in this scanner's software.

Thanks,

Walt Bilofsky

The easiest way is to use the index print option, then you select which
frames you want and press scan. The scan utility even auto names the scans
for you.

On page 60 of my (Dutch) manual the Custom Wizard is described. The
third illlustration on that page is of the way you can set which of the
6 frames are to be scanned in the batch.
Once it is set up, it's a piece of cake to scan hoards of negative
strips of the same lengths... :)) I have mostly 4 frame strips, so I
scan frames 2 3 4 and 5 all the time.

So make a Custom Wizard setting that contains all the parameters you
want in the scan, save that set and use it for all the strips coming
from the same
film.

Thanks. But I don't see a Custom Wizard in my software or manual.
This is for the Dimage Scan Elite 5400 II. I'm using the 1.0.0
software for Windows XP that came with the unit; there is no update on
the Konica web site.

Are you referring to a different scanner, or am I missing something?

I'm very sorry: I was indeed referring to the older Elite 5400 - I
wonder why they left out this very convenient way of setting up a batch
process.

Isn't there even a batch button in what in the older Elite 5400 is
called the
"Launcher"?

Download a copy of Vuescan from hamrick.com and see if it will do
what you wish with your model of scanner. You will need to read the
manual carefully since setting up a batch is a little bit of work.
If you like the program you can then pay for it and use it without
getting $$$ overlayed on your output.

VueSDcan doesn't yet support the 5400 Mk. II

Thanks for your reply. Yes, there is a batch button - and it is
possible to specify various parameters for the batch scan - but it
always scans all 6 frames. I called Konica Minolta today and they
confirmed this.

I suspect that the new scanner was ready to ship before the software -
so they just took out the incomplete software features and shipped it
anyway. :-(

What a shame if that is the case!

Indeed the Elite 5400 has such a button without the possibility to
choose which frames you want to be done.

Do you know the Elite 5400? And its Custom Wizard? I owned a Dimage
Scan Dual IV and it had exactly the same Wizard as the 5400, and I
couldn't do without it!

If you don't know these models, look in alt.binaries.test where I put
an image from my Manual showing the button of the Wizard - the header
has "ATT Walt" in it
:)

But may very soon. Little birdy told me ;)

You mean like it supports the original Elite?

Instead of chirping (boasting), the little birdy would be well advised
to fix the many existing bugs first before generating a new batch...

Thanks, Alex. I have not used any other film scanners, but other
posts have spoken about the Custom Wizard. It does not exist in the
current Scan Elite 5400 II software. It does have, in addition to the
buttons your image showed, an SHO button (enhance details in
highlights and shadows) and a Pixel Polish button.

I tried three times to get to Konica Minolta tech support to get
clarification on this. I also emailed them from their web site but
have not heard back in two days.

Finally I got to a senior technician. He verified that the frame
selection functionality has been taken out of batch. So if one wants
to scan only 4 of the 6 frames using the Elite 5400 II, the batch scan
can not be used.

The other problem using the scan utility is that every time the film
holder is inserted, some of the settings are reset. It thinks it is
using the same "master setup", but the image corrections and scan job
settings get changed. So after inserting the film holder, it is
necessary to (1) re-select the master setup to apply all the
corrections, and (2) pick the slides to scan.

This is disappointing. I really think the software was not ready as
fast as the hardware. :-(

Hello Walt,

This is disappointing indeed! From the start I suspected that the older
model I have is more satisfying in general, I did read some negative
remarks about the model II. E.g. the missing 'Pixel Polish', being a
diffuser between the light source and the film. This seems to be
useless when LED's are used as light source.

I agree, reading what you say about the software, that it isn't
finished yet. Hopefully you may be able to download a newer version in
the near future!

Greetings, Alex

The thing you're talking about being missing is the "Grain Dissolver".
Pixel Polish is kinda-like Minolta's own version of Digital SHO.
Vaguely.

I think I'm glad I've got the pre-cost-reduced version. I'm not a
fan of Digital GEM software that "replaces" the Grain Dissolver.

Mike

P.S. - I *do* love Digital ICE though. Fantastic.

Yes you're right - my mistake.

And yes: I am again and again amazed by the Digital ICE ! My negatives,
some very old, are sometimes horribly scratched and speckled with
unremovable dust. In the scans hardly anything is visible of these
defects
:)
