I am considering buying a basic desktop without an operating system as I
have XP pro full version not yet used (gift from son-in-law). My question
is: how is the operating system installed on a blank disk, or at most a
standard DOS loaded disk?

Just boot from the Windows XP CD (change the BIOS boot order if necessary to
accomplish this) and follow the prompts for a clean installation (delete the
existing partition by pressing "D" when prompted, then create a new one).

You can find detailed instructions here:

Thanks, Ken - this should do it!

Start the PC and 'quickly' put the XP CD into the CD-ROM, XP will do the
rest. For an illustrated guide to installing XP visit this link on my

If there's no OS on the C drive, just start the PC, then immediately press
DEL (or equivalent key - refer to the PC's documentation) to get to the BIOS
to change the boot device to CD drive. Save the settings, exit the
BIOS.....it will then reboot and continue to load from the CD, and start the
XP install sequence.
