I have a laptop (XP) connected through a hub to a desktop
pc running 2000. Both have access to the internet via DSL
modem also attched to the hub.

I cannot get the 2 computers to see each other. The
message is "The network path was not found".

I believe I have tried evry variation of the network
configuration wizard with no apparent success.

Can anyone offer suggestions as to what I am missing?

assuming you have workgroup, I am quoting this form
http://www.ChicagoTech.net
"Network path not found" in a workgroup network - error 53

RESOLUTIONS:
1) Make sure that File and Printer Sharing is enabled on the shared
computer.
2) Make sure that shared machine has something shared.
3) Make sure that you have created the same workgroup and logon the same
username if you try to access w2k/xp network.
4) Make sure that you have enabled NetBIOS over TCP/IP if this is a mixed OS
network.

Many times your firewall won't allow each computer to see
each other. Go to network connections, right click on the
network connection; click properties, click advance and
disable the firewall. Warning, this leaves you wide open.
