Hi,
I was wondering if anyone could answer this question: When installing new
software on XP Home Edition, how do you prevent users from other accounts
seeing what you have installed, ie. Net nanny etc from children. XP wants to
make programs available to users in all user accounts by placing icons on the
desktop and access via the menu.

Cheers

Hi John,

When XP came out, the majority of people had the opposite problem, software
only installing for the one user. Now that distributors have caught up, some
are experiencing the issues you are seeing. This page I wrote may help:

Look in the \documents and settings\All Users\Desktop folder. Items that
should be available to all users should go there - items you want to
restrict should not, and should go to specific user accounts only. Check
after installs to see what has actually been done. You can do this with
Explorer, but you'll likely have to adjust the View settings (tools, Folder
Options, View, Show hidden files and Folders, display the contents of system
folders, and de-select Hide Protected Operating System files)

You will otherwise want to set restrictions on the children's accounts to
prevent them from "correcting" your work themselves.

Also, remember that the XP Home Administrator account is only visible in
Safe Mode, and that by default it usually has no password. Set one, and
don't forget what it is. If you don't do this, the account will probably
be used to promote the restricted accounts.

Just a comment about "this site." This is not really a site at all. This is
the microsoft.public.windowsxp.basics newsgropup. You are accessing this
newsgroup by looking at the Microsoft web site that mirrors it, but using
the web interface to read this newsgroup is the slowest, clunkiest, most
error-prone method there is. Do yourself a favor and switch to a newsreader,
such as Outlook Express, which comes with Windows. See
