My wife and I just purchased a new basic desktop (Dell 2600) after having
serious virus problems with our old "out dated" computer. What do you guys
recommend as the best available anti-virus software available right now? We
would really appreciate any help you can provide. We are admittedly very
naive in this area. Also, what can we do to eliminate pop-up ads? (and
adware/spyware) We've tried the Google browser search bar and something
just called "Pop-Up Stopper". Neither work, albeit both were free.

Thanks in advance

AV: Posssibly NOD32

Pop-up ads: Strange you say Pop-Up Stopper isn't working. I have it, it
seems to work fine.

Adware/spyware: SpyBot Search and Destroy, The Cleaner (I use both).

To check for "Spyware" download the free version of "Ad-Aware".

Run a free online virus scan from:
Panda:

SpywareBlaster will stop a lot of things from getting installed in the first
place.

I would install the Free Zone Alarm Firewall,
www.zonelabs.com

If you don't install Zone Alarm, be sure and turn the Firewall on that comes
with Windows XP.

Whatever Antivirus Program you decide on, be sure and keep it updated, some
of them have
daily updates.

Hope this helps,
Tom

KAV and F-Secure.

With a new PC you also need a firewall.

Browse other areas of the claymania site as well.
Also, what can we do to eliminate pop-up ads? (and

Don't use IE for anything except Windows Updates and keeping IE and
your OS patched. Delete OE. Set its security settings in all zones to
high. Use Mozilla for browsing, email and newsgroups. Find a copy of
Proxomitron and use it along with Moz.
We've tried the Google browser search bar and something

Avoid useless junk like that. Avoid all software apps that require IE.
Use AdAware and Spybot as checks, but if you follow my advice. use
some common sense, and learn some "safe hex" you won't be bothered
with spyware or malware.
Thanks in advance

You're welcome.

I find pop-up stopper to be pretty good (even have to disable it to
browse some websites) - it hasn't got itself disabled at all has it?
Right click on the hand in the system tray and make sure it is set to
block pop-up windows. Adaware and Spybot are both pretty good against
spyware IMHO

I wonder if the OP is referring to popups that use XP's Messenger service,
instead of popups from web pages...?

In which case, a firewall should stop 'em? (Or disabling the Messenger
service)
