I run Microsoft 2000 professional + service pack 2. Dell Inspiron 8000.
capacity shown as 18.6 GB with 9.3 free. also Omega 250 Zip as external -
stand alone system with no server or Network
The basic performance is getting slower. Example To open Microsoft Word (or
any programme) takes around 2 minutes.
I regularly clean disks & defragment
Whatever I do the Task Manager shows 54 Processes running at start up. Is
this the problem? ideas and how to fix it please. Note: pretty much a beginer
and technoprat!

54 startup processes is pretty heavy in my opinion. Most likely you can
easily pare that down to less than 30 and less than 20 if you are
aggressive and know what is going on and what to shut down or disable.
But take it easy, one thing at a time. Don't disable things that you
are unsure about, search the net for information on the proceses or ask
again in this group for the things you are unsure about.

Look here for information on some of the processes:

(Look in the Task List)

Services Guide for Windows XP
http://www.theeldergeek.com/services_guide.htm
(It's written for XP but it's nearly identical for Windows 2000)

There are several ways of dealing with these autostart programs, via the
programs themselves, via registry edits or with the aid of helper
applications. The preferred method is to go in the programs themselves
and turn off the autostart option. The well written and graceful
programs always give an option to be turned off at boot. It's the not
so well written or graceful programs that present a bit of a difficulty
as they can be hidden in in other startup places. If that is the
case then you can look in the Services management console and see if you
can set the associated service to "Manual" start instead of "Auto".
Check the Startup Folders and delete the entries if there.

You can also view some of these items by right-clicking My
Computer>Manage>System Tools>System Information>Software
Environment>Startup Programs.

If you still are having difficulties then helper applications will
come in handy. I recommend the following:

CodeStuff Starter: http://members.lycos.co.uk/codestuff/
Sysinternals Autoruns:
http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware/autoruns.shtml

Oh yeah, another thing, often the kind of problem that you are
experiencing can be caused by virus, adware/spyware or other malware.
Make sure that none of these pests are on you computer. These are
pretty handy:

Lavasoft As-Aware
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/

Spybot Search & Destroy
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/spybotsd/index.html

Finally, is there any particular reason why you have not upgraded your
service pack to SP4? Alot of fixes have been issued since SP2 and one
or some of these fixes might cure your problem.

Thank you John
It looks like I have both problems but the virus (MYBOT) is the more
serious. I downloaded a2 freeware and it found 22 infected files. I have now
removed these but still get messages about 'malicious worms', 'backdoor
activities', Internet Explorer infecdted' etc etc. Looking at the 'Sybot'
page, I think I will buy their search & destroy programme for $29 as I dont
think my skills are up to deleting only the right files manually - also they
say it will solve my other problems of too many automatic start up files.
You have been most helpful and hopefully tomorrow, with the new downloaded
Sybot programme I will be able to remove the virus and cut down my
programmes. Then I will take your advice & get Service pack 4
Thanks for your help
Kevin

What program are you talking about? Both Ad-Aware and Spybot Search &
destroy are free and both are fully funtional, no need to pay for them.
Let us know what this $29 program is, you might be wasting your money
for nothing.

'Speedupmypc.2John
I was planning to try & remove the virus with Spybot and then download
'speed up my pc.2' from pacmans portal in conjunction with uniblue.
To date I have downloaded a2 and this has detected some 22 'malware' virus
programmes I have deleted these but still I get pop up
virus/malicious/backdoor etc messages on Outlook, Internet Explorer,
Broadband and many others.
I am trying to persevere with a2 but I must be missing something (remember I
am a technoprat) as I dont seem to progress beyond this point.

Save your money, more comments on that later, for now lets address your
spyware and virus removal problems.

Forget a2 for now, it looks like a decent program but if you have run it
several times and it has removed all it can but still tells you that
there are other pests on the computer try another removal tool. In my
earlier post I referred you to what are probably amongst the best
adware/spyware removal tools available and both are free. Once again:

Ad-Aware Personal
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/
(Ad-Aware personal is the free version, others are pay for.)

Spybot Search & Destroy
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/spybotsd/index.html

Download them and run them. Both of these programs are (relatively)
easy to use. Remember that these programs, like anti-virus programs,
use "definition" files to identify pests. It's sort of like a
"dictionary", if the pest is in the "dictionary" the program will
identify and know how to remove it. If it isn't in the "dictionary" it
won't identify and remove it. As new threats and pests are constantly
being sent out on their merry way across the internet the "dictionary"
needs to be updated to inform the program about them. When you download
and install Ad-Aware and Spybot they may not necessarily include the
latest available definitions, so use the program "update" feature to get
the latest files available.

If you are still left with virus or others after you run these programs
then you will have to manually remove them, unless you have an ALREADY
installed and up to date anti-virus program on the computer. I said
ALREADY installed and that is important! It is generally bad practice
to install anti-virus programs to try and remove an existing virus,
almost all AV software instructs you to that before you install it.
Some virus are pretty tame and innocuous, others are extremely
destructive and if they detect that AV software is about to be installed
it may trigger a payload delivery mechanism and cause total mayhem! You
MUST remove these nasty virus manually prior to installing the AV
software. Some AV software will instruct you to shut down the computer
and reboot from the install cd so that it may do a preliminary virus
scan on the drive(s) while Windows is down and verify that the most
destructive virus are not already present.

If you don't have any anti-virus software on the computer you can do an
on-line scan from some of the major AV software companies, Symantec has
a good on-line scan tool:

http://security.symantec.com/sscv6/?productid=symhome&langid=ie&venid=sym
(I think you need to use Internet Explorer for the tool to work properly)

If virus are detected research them and follow the removal instructions.
For some of the more difficult virus Symantec makes free removal tools
available to everyone. See here:

http://securityresponse.symantec.com/
http://www.symantec.com/search/

Some pests can be quite stubborn and difficult to get rid of. In these
cases sometimes it's easier to boot the computer to Safe Mode or to use
the XP msconfig tool and use it to disable all but Microsoft services
(non essential services). Once done you then enable the services again.
msconfig is available here:

http://www.gwynfryn.co.uk/downloads.htm or directly here:
http://www.gwynfryn.co.uk/downloads/msconfig.zip

Download msconfig and place it in your System32 folder and use it to
look at or disable the startup entries for troubleshooting purpose. To
start msconfig, after you have placed it in the System32 folder just
type msconfig in the Start>Run box. You should not use msconfig to
permanently disable startup entries, use the other methods that I
described in my first post instead.

Now, as for that $29 speedupmypc.2... Save your money, that thing is
probably just slightly above snake oil if not outright snake oil! The
reason your pc is slow is not due to something it can fix, it's because
you have an infestation of virus and spyware and probably a pile of
valid but completely unnecessary programs and services starting when you
start the computer. A few extracts from their program homepage:

* Recover and optimize memory immediately at the click of a button.

Absolute bunk! Windows 2000 needs no memory optimizer! If anything
that thing will probably use MORE memory.

* Unleash your CPU and assign more processing power to the applications
that you are currently using.

More bunk! The Windows 2000 Executive Services does that and it doesn't
like anyone fiddling with its duties! If you want to "Unleash" your CPU
keep the pc clean and lean.

* Enhance and improve startup times
Probably, but that is easy to do manually.

* Prevent and recover quickly from computer crashes.
" By informing you when resources are hitting critical levels,
SpeedUpMyPC enables you to take action before your computer crashes or
stops responding."

Yet more stupid bunk! If anything that will probably cause the computer
to use MORE resources and cause crashes for nothing! Windows 2000 is
VERY stable and it doesn't crash for nothing.

So, my verdict... the thing will probably do more harm than good so save
your money.

Updating your Windows 2000 to SP4 is probably a good idea also but MAKE
ABSOLUTELY SURE that you have no pests and virus on the computer before
you do so. If you have any questions or need additional help post again.

John

By the way, surely you must have a properly configured firewall on the
computer? Ask yourself how you ended up with all these pests, you need
to practice safe hex! If you downloaded these pests from your email I
would strongly recommend this: http://www.mailwasher.net/ There is a
"pay for" and free version. The free version works just fine.

Thanks for your long email and particularly your review of Speed up my
computer. I had second thoughts yesterday so did not download it & will not!
A lot of information to take in here!
I will work through your email step by step and take the action you suggest.
I have Norton Proffesional + firewall installed and up to the recent
infection it has done me very well. I have run this and updated the virus
definitions (I have this scheduled for once a month). I have also run a full
computer scan and Norton shows no problems.
If I may I will get back to you when I have completed the tasks.
As to whether I shall Uninstall a2 I shall wait till the end of the processes.
Thanks for your help I will get on to it now.

I have now done most of the virus checking through the sites you
recommended. For info the 'Mailwash' site was unobtainable from the address
you gave - I had to get it from a google search. The Symantec security site
took over 2 hours to interogate my files for threats and particularly
viruses. The end result (so I am told) is that I am virus clear and have
protection against all known threats. Thank you for this advice, I shall now
revert to my original task of trying to reduce the 54+ running processes
using the helper files you sent in your first email - though I fear I do not
have the knowledge or information to asses each file.
I will debate Uninstalling a2 as it still throws up all sorts of pop up
warnings about my basic programmes (Outlook, Internet Explorer, Broadband
etc) despite all others saying they are now clear.
Once again thanks for your help in the threats and virus battle.
Yours
Kevin Best

Maybe a2 gives "false" positives, hard to say, maybe it's better than
the others and does find stuff the others can't. If Ad-Aware, Spybot
S&D, your Norton installed AV and the online AV scan all tell you that
you are clean then you're probably free of pests. As for the 54
processes just do a search on each of them, you will get the needed
information, who knows maybe one of them is a pest. That mailwasher
link works here...

Progress Report: 95% there! I am now pest/virus free, have only 43 processes
at start up (already quicker in opening programmes) BUT with my inexperience
in deleting processes or removing unwanted programmes I must have deleted
something that is essential to run Microsoft Outlook (Not Express)! The
programme opens but does not complete its loading. I can access the Calendar,
Contacts etc but when I click 'Inbox' it just stops. So I cannot send &
receive or go back to any other function. So I have no email facility.
How do I download a programme to check which bit I deleted and then repai it?
I have Outlook. Version 10. Build 2627 and a product ID code - I think
Outlook was pre loaded on my Dell. I have the 3 Dell 'Reinstall disks and the
8 disks for Microsoft Works Suite. I told you that I am a beginer at this but
what should I do next.
Many thanks for the help to date.
Kevin

I'm not too knowledgeable about Outlook, I have never used it and don't
know much about troubleshooting it. The only thing that comes to mind
or the only guess I have is that you might have set the Protected
Storage Service to "Manual" or "Disabled". It needs to be on
"Automatic" for Outlook to work properly. Other than that I have no ideas.
