Hi,

I have a new AOpen H300 micro ATX case and I am planning on building a
VERY basic PC for my 3.5 year old. (Basically to get him off our PC)

The spec will be as follows

MSI 6340 MATX Mobo
Duron 900 Processor
256mb PC133 Ram (2 x 128)
10 Gb 5400 HDD
8x CD Rom
(Onboard sound / graphics)
Win 98

Problem is it comes with a 145w PSU, admittedly a high quality one my
concern is will it actually run the PC as I just cannot find a decent
PSU that will replace the "proprietary" one AOpen fitted. The PSU will
run an P3 866 and the Duron is a similar spec

Any ideas ?

I think it will work, John. And you aren't going to hurt anything by trying
it. At worst, your new system will be unstable, meaning it refuses to load
windows or hangs/reboots a lot. If that happens, just go for a really
cheap mini-tower ATX (ATX will fit microATX mainboard) case with ~300W power
supply. It can be cheap, for a 3.5 year old. :) -Dave

You'll be straining the power supply to drive that hardware, and may end up
burning out some of the computer's components if the power supply output
becomes too unstable.

I have built a number of AOpen boxes with these 'little' PSUs and not had
any trouble with them. The ones I built are diskless thin clients, 2GHz
celerons and have no hard drive in them but they do have 128Mb Geforce 4
cards installed.

The small PSU should not be a problem, after all if a PC case is not
designed to have a HDD and CD rom etc in them why are all the mounting
brackets in there? There is only a few power leads out of the PSU and I
wouldn't go fitting Y cables to them though.
