Would someone please point me to ro tell me the most basic thing. Connection
2 or 3 xp pro computers via a wireless router to the interent - Are these
computeres now networked and able to access each others files? If not, how?
What exact settings do I need to check in Windows for file sharing or
whatever I need. WHats the diff - Shared Folder / File Sharing.

Thank you so much. Any link is okay. None Ive found seem to go over this
basic stuff at least understandably to me.

Run the Network Setup Wizard (in Start > All Programs > Accessories
Communications) on each computer. If the Wizard detects the router's
shared Internet connection, tell it to use that connection.
Otherwise, tell the Wizard that the computer connects to the Internet
through a residential gateway. Also, tell the Wizard to turn on File
and Printer Sharing.

If there's a firewall program installed (Norton, McAfee, ZoneAlarm,
PC-cillin, etc), configure the firewall to allow access by other
computers on the local area network.

You can then share desired disks or folders. The files within those
disks and folders will be available to other computers over the
network.

Dave,

There are no simple settings involved in networking Windows computers. When in
doubt, diagnose and test from the bottom up.

If both computers now have Internet service, they are CAPABLE of sharing files
with each other. Go through my Windows Networking Troubleshooting guide, item
by item, please.

Look at logs from "browstat status", "ipconfig /all", "net config server", and
"net config workstation", from each computer, so we can diagnose the problem.
Read this article, and linked articles, and follow instructions precisely
(download browstat!):

The computers are certainly capable sharing folders and files. However, as
your computer
currently stands, they are not able to share folders and files. Exactly how
you setup these
computers is discussed in the two sites of the two MVPs.

Fundamentally sharing a folder is no different than sharing a file. A
folder is just a special
kind of file.

Yes, networking is rather complex and complicated because the internet must
be
accessed by very very different operating systems.
