Basic Network Connections

I have a PC with XPPRO and a laptop with WIN2K. I want to connect the two
so that I can transfer files between them.

I have a USB cable connected to both the computers. Now the problem(s) I
get is/are manifold....

Can not log into the XPPRO system without using the actual administrator
account, for all others it says no right/permissions held.

Can not transfer most files between the two systems with system giving
message that I do not have rights/permissions etc...

Difficult to connect between the two, XPPRO does not automatically pick-up
the other computer, I have to type in the name of the computer to have it
show the same in the 'network connections'. (I have not used the Network
wizard to make a small network though).

Would appreciate if anyone has any quick answers to my
questions/observations and I would appreciate directions to web material
that can teach me how to set-up and use this system between two
computers...something is simple english, for a layman!

Thanks in advance.

I would use a simple network cable for this. The laptop should already
have a LAN port, if this is missing on the PC, buy a cheap LAN card.
Once you have set up the connection, run the Network Connection Setup
Wizard on the PC and create the Wizard Disk. Use this disk to set up
the network on the laptop.

You neglected to mention that in using a RJ45 Ethernet NIC for a cable to
cable connection you MUST use a Crossover Ethernet cable not a standard
network type ethernet cable or the connection will not work.

Also you must use a special cable to connect two computer
with USB ports.

No although I did like Wojo in Barney Miller.
My last names woyach and Wojo is a nickname I picked up all too many years
ago in High School.

By default Windows XP forces all incoming network connections to the "Guest" level of
access (ForceGuest) and Simple File Sharing is enabled. With this model you can
configure five different levels of access to shares and files including "Level 5:
Shared on the Network (Read and Write)" where any user (local or remote) can read,
write, change, or delete a file in a folder shared. This level of access is
recommended only for a closed protected network that has a firewall configured.

To configure a folder to Level 5 Sharing:

- Right-click the folder, and then click Sharing and Security
- Click to select the Share this folder on the network check box, and then click OK.

For more information see the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article:

KB304040 - Description of File Sharing and Permissions in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?Product=winxp&scid=kb;en-us;304040

If you have advanced knowledge of NTFS and share permissions (so that you can keep
your folders and files secure) you can disable ForceGuest and Simple File Sharing
and, thus, have more control over the permissions to individual users (control like
you have on a Windows 2000 computer). To disable simple file sharing:

- Click Start, and then click My Computer.
- On the Tools menu, click Folder Options, and then click the View tab.
- In the Advanced Settings section, click to clear the Use simple file sharing
(Recommended) check box.
- Click OK.

For more information see the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article:

shared folder in Windows XP

Sharing and ForceGuest" see those sections in following Windows XP Resource Kit

To gain access to a shared folder on a remote computer in a Workgroup:

- Open My Computer.
- Under Other Places, click My Network Places.
- Under Network Tasks, click View workgroup computers.
- Double-click the remote computer to view the Shared Folders

And missed by all of us old people that have even heard of it.
I haven't even seen Barney Miller on Nick at Nite or TV Land for quite a few
years.

Wojo and especially Detrick (sp) were fun to watch.

College kid had a masters thesis project. The neighbors
complained about noise in his apartment. The bomb squad
guys carted the "bomb" and put it on the table in the squad
room. They were wondering what the thing was, the kid said
it was an A-bomb, they said it wasn't. He said all he
needed was some U-238.
Detrick walked in add the first words out of his mouth was ,
"Who's atomic bomb is this?"

Another show, a time traveler from the future came back and
was studying Detrick because he was so important. Or the
one with the voice analyzer that Luger (the Internal Affairs
guy) was using to get the 12th Squad. Wojo was really
scared about getting nervous and failing. Detrick sat down
and said he was born in a galaxy far far away and the
machine did not beep. So Detrick had to end the show by
saying he was born in New Jersey.

Now we need to talk about Babylon 5 and Lyta Alexander.

Wow Jim, you have way too much time on your hands ;-)

Jim Macklin said:

True, but I have this almost perfect memory that keeps me
busy. I remember the FBI agent testimony about Bill Clinton
and his Chinese buddies that somehow all met in 1974 in
Little Rock immediately after they entered the country.
I remember my first real kiss, from Sarah and I remember
9-11. I also remember Don Herbert, the real Mr. Wizard,
brought to you by GE.
I remember Korean war Movietone news reels and I remember
how much fun it was to fly from Colorado Springs to Dodge
City at 25 feet and 240 mph.

Oh, by the way Thorsten, is your problem solved yet?
lol

Jim Macklin said:
True, but I have this almost perfect memory that keeps me
busy. I remember the FBI agent testimony about Bill Clinton
and his Chinese buddies that somehow all met in 1974 in
Little Rock immediately after they entered the country.
I remember my first real kiss, from Sarah and I remember
9-11. I also remember Don Herbert, the real Mr. Wizard,
brought to you by GE.
I remember Korean war Movietone news reels and I remember
how much fun it was to fly from Colorado Springs to Dodge
City at 25 feet and 240 mph.

The best scene in the movie, "JAWS" was the ship cabin with
the guys talking about their injuries and scares.

As for 9-11, it seems that many people have forgotten.

That was a good scene in a very good movie.

Unfortunately your right about 9-11. Everybody remembers but nobody
REMEMBERS.

Jim Macklin said:

As for 9-11, it seems that many people have forgotten.
