Is it possible to send a fax from my pc to another fax in another city 1
hour away (would be long distance ) whether or not either machines have
seperate stand alone fax machines nor distinctive ring? does this have to be
done online or not.
both pc's have win xp home edition. If it is possible, will it be billed to
the sender as long distance. And how will the recipient know that they
received a fax from me (sender) unless I told them. remember, neither
machine has a standalone fax machine. just pc's. thanks

It's no different than a standalone fax machine:
You use your telephone line attached to your fax modem.
The caller is billed for long distance calls by the phone company.
The recipient know they have a fax because there will be a pop up
notification on the screen or they will hear it arrive.

The Fax Program must be configured to receive faxes. If you are using the
same phone line you use for voice you will have problems. You will pick up
the phone when it rings, hear the fax tones, and have no way to switch it to
the PC.

You need a dedicated line or advance notice to receive faxes on a PC. I
stick to email.
