In an attempt to stop certain anti virus systems running my XP sp 2 on a Sony
Viao I seem to have disbabled all the local services (of which there must be
about 60 odd). I`ve tried putting them all back to `automatic` (long job) but
when I restarted the computer nothing had been saved. Symtoms are that when
it starts up only something a bit more than safe mode seems to load so can
only open a few files and no wireless connection etc. Wireles doesnt work in
`safe mode with networking ` either .System restore wont help me as doesnt go
back far enough. Not sure what I`ve done but dont think I`ve deleted
anything. Is there a default settings I could revert to ? Any help greatly
appreciated.

Use thr recovery Option on your Sony Laptop which will take you back to the
factory settings and wipe out all your data, applications installed or
settings for network ..etc.
This the only way if you don't want clean install.
Read the documentation came with your laptop on how to use the Recovery to
Factory Settings.

Is your computer infected? If not, disabling services thinking this would
offer protection against future infection is certainly not the way to do
it. If your computer is infected, then you need to clean it up or back up
your data and reinstall Windows. It's your choice.

If your computer is clean, you could try a System Restore to a time before
you got busy.

If you want more help, you're going to need to provide clarification and
details.

Thanks Nass-will give it a go. I havent got the original back up discs. I`m
ok about loosing the stuff on my hard drive as I`ve transferred what I want .
I presume what I`m then left with is the original Windows XP settings so I
just start from scratch?

Read what you wrote.
So, it is better to go back to factory, rather than a clean install!!!
And, you repair computers.
Very frightening!

Thanks Nass
Tried opening the partition which is clearly there via the viao recovery
programme but it wouldnt open saying something like there was a another
programme accessing it but there was nothing else open as far as I was aware.
It was the same in safe mode.So if I use one of the F keys is that likely to
let me into the partition and avoid needing to use the installed recovery
programme?
Thanks

Hi Topman lol

Yes, try the F key to access the Recovery partition on Boot up. I don't know
the Key or the Key combination for your Machine Specs (other brand use same F
key on most of their Products) read the Documentation on how to
access/recover to Factory settings.
Let us know your Progress.
Good luck

Factory restore went like a dream ! But there is still a problem which I
originally thought was clashing anti virus software hence the restore. When
it boots up sometimes it will load with what you would expect to see in the
bottom task bar sometimes theres only some of the icons. Sometime Explorer
will open sometimes it will not. Its also difficult to shut programmes down
and everything is slow. You get the pop up box with `end programme / cancel`
but even pressing end programme leaves the egg timer running. Nothing shows
as running in the applications box of task manager. Managed to load windows
one care with hope of running a virus scan but when I get the menu page again
the egg timer is running so cant click on the scan option. Have I got a virus
or is it something else? Thanks anyone!

I think when you restored to factory setting you got the AV which installed
by the vendor as Trail version for 3 month or so.
Try to download one of the free AVs like Avast, Bitdefender, Avira or
kaspersky on your desktop with one or the two Anti-malware mentioned below in
the cleaning instructions. Disconnect from the Internet uninstall the Trail
AV and install the AV you downloaded on your desktop. Reboot then Install the
Antimalware application, connect to teh internet and update both apps and run
a through scan for malware and viruses in Safe Mode.

1... First, try to clean up your caches, Internet files and delete cookies
by doing this:
Click Start >> Control Panel >> Double click Network and Internet
Connections >> Double click Internet Options.
On the IE properties windows you will see these Tabs:
General | Security | Privacy | Content | Connections | Programs |
Advanced
Under General Tab clear your History, Internet Files and Cookies.
Then click on Advanced tab and scroll down to under the Browsing Option:
[&] Browsing
[ ] Enable Third-Party browser extensions (Req Rest) uncheck this box.
Then click on Programs Tab and click Manage Add-Ons and Disable all non
Verified Add-Ons (You should Renable them later one-by-one and see the
culprit and update it or remove it.
How to manage Add-Ons:

Thanks Nass. Yes you are right its a 2006 Norton 3 month trial. I did try and
uninstall this in normal mode but the windows uninstall prog takes ages to
load and then wont respond when I click uninstall. In Safemode whilst quicker
it wont allow me to unistall and suggests going back to normal mode to do
this. Tried loading AVG in safe mode but this prog wont load fully in safe
mode although will try others you suggested. So whats the best way of getting
rid of the Norton progs if I cant use the normal method? Will I have a
problem now I`ve loaded Onecare?
Thanks

Download this tool and also the Anti-virus/antimalware before uninstalling
Norton to be protected from the WWW!

Download and run the Norton Removal Tool

Update for Nass ! Cant get Norton installer link to fully work in safe mode
and cant get Explorer working in normal mode to access the link at all.
When you boot the computer up you get varying degrees of programme
installations. eg one boot up will allow you to open certain files such as
windows one care the next time you can`t. I managed to get the windows
uninstall to open and although it slowly started to uninstall Norton it froze
at the end of the process. I also managed to get the virus full scan
operating on onecare last night but after 3 hours it froze having completed
78% of the scan !
So the symptoms are still the same ie sluggish, varaible degree of stuff
loading on boot up, variable internet access in explorer. My next task will
be to run one of the anti spy progs you suggested( assuming it will load and
work in safe mode) and see what that flags up. Anything else??

Sorted! Went to services in admin tools and disabled all references to norton
stuff. All working fine so it must have been a conflict not a virus. Thanks
for your support Nass

Okay, that's good but did you uninstalled Norton?
You can delete these services in the Registry here:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services =
Note becareful and read what service you are deleting.
Glad things looking good and you are welcome.
Good luck,
nass
