At the bottom of my desktop, on the left side, but just to
the right of the Start button are several buttons/icons
(including Explorer and Outlook Express).
1. What is the name of this part of the desktop? How do I
remove programs from this part of the desktop?

2. At the bottom of my desktop to the right are several
more buttons/icons. This area of the desktop is
the "system tray" -- is that correct? How do I remove the
programs from this part of the desktop?

3. I've got a "blue button" in this lower right-hand
corner area -- Do I need this?

Thanks

1.) This is the Quick Launch bar. Right-click and select delete.
2.) Asked and answered in win2000.applications
3.) Probably not, but hard to say without knowing some details, etc.

I've got one button/icon called the C-Media mixer -- when
I right-click, it won't give me any options. It simply
shows the words "C-media mixer."
