I'm looking to connect my desktop computer (running
Win98SE) to my Laptop (running XP Home) with a crossover
cable for transfering files back and forth. Nothing more
than that. No internet, no printer access, none of that
stuff. The network setup wizard doesn't deal with
something so simple and I've had undesirable results with
every combination of options it offers. Could anyone
please advise what the best method is to achieve this?
Thanks!

Take a look at http://onecomputerguy.com/networking/xp_network.htm for
information on how to setup the network...

Using the cross-over cable should have no effect on your ability to
complete the steps as described in that primer...

Windows XP uses a technology called Automatic Private Ip Addressing, if DHCP
is configured on the network card. If a DHCP server is unavailable it will
assign an IP address from the range 169.254.0.01 through 169.254.0.254 so
manually assign your Win9x computer an address in that range and you should
be all set.
The windows XP admin account also needs to have a password assigned in order
to access shares. The Win9x needs the Microsoft Client Service Installed.
The user name and password you use to log into Windows 9x should also be the
same that you use on the Win XP machine. Delete all the password List files
on win9x *.pwl and it will prompt you on the next login for a username and
password.
