I've tried to create a BartPE disc, and in the process I got warning
messages about a missing NVRAID.SYS plus another file (IASTOR.SYS if I
remember correctly). When trying to boot from the disc, it says
(surprise, surprise) NVRAID.SYS is missing, and everything terminates.

I added the missing files to the generated BartPE directory and then
recreated the CD image. This time there were no warning messages, but
when trying to boot, the same thing - NVRAID.SYS is missing.

FWIW, I don't have RAID on my system, and I have nothing from NVIDEA.

I am unable to find a solution on the web, Any ideas?

As a side question, I noticed that my Windows system does not have the
two files on it. But, in another partition, where I have a virtually
virgin Windows, created from the same slipstreamed XP/SP2 Pro CD as my
working system, the two files ARE present. I must assume that something
that I've installed over the years deleted these files. Who would have
done that, or is there another explanation?

Thanks or any help.

There's a specific way to add drivers - you can't just add them to the
generated directory and expect Windows to know about them. Check out this
page and look at the various driver plugins for examples of how to do it.
http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/drivers/

You do have a chipset from nVidia. NVRAID.SYS is a SATA driver for the
motherboard's NForce storage controller, IIRC.

You might want to visit http://www.911cd.net/forums/index.php?showforum=21
for more specific help.

Fair enough, but the fact that the warning messages disappeared makes
me think that I added them in the correct location. Also, since these
files ARE on the XP CD, why does PEBuilder not pick them up like
everything else?

I may have already followed those instructions, but I'm not sure (it's
been a few weeks since I tried). I'll have another go.

OK, but NVRAID.SYS does not exist on my main XP system.

Thanks for the info.

Are you using a legitimate XP disc or some kludged together OEM version
with added drivers? My XP discs don't have any nvraid files. How could
they since they predate nforce and sata by a few years?

No, but even if you're not using that part of the chipset, BartPE doesn't
know that and needs drivers for all the hardware it detects.

The disc was created from a genuine Windows CD, with XP2 slipstreamed.
Perhaps the drivers that were present during the slipstreaming process
were faulty. That sounds like a plausible explanation.

If you have the nvidia raid chip on the motherboard you can disable it in
the bios.
Also, just adding missing files won't fix the problems. You need to go
theough the install routine.

Well, as I mentioned, I'm not actually AWARE of having anything from
NVIDIA. But even if, as Michael says, it is there, my laptop's BIOS is
so limited in what you can change that this would certainly not be
feasible.

But there is various documentation describing the process of adding
files to the process. Going through the entire install routine
(assuming you mean running all stages of the BartPE generation) would
overwrite any additons that one may have made to the previously
generated folders. Also, note that the original warnings DID disappear
after I added the files and reran the ISO creation step.
