One can make Google Groups links shorter, they do not need all the
information from that URL.
For showing a single message:
http://groups.google.com/groups?&selm=<Message-ID>
For showing a whole thread:
http://groups.google.com/groups?&threadm=<Message-ID of initial posting>
In this case, the URL can be shortened to:
http://groups.google.com/groups?&[email protected]
- This way, a Google Groups URL usually fits in one line. Just an
additional (and off topic) information, but probably useful for those
which do not like this third service URL forwards.

About a hundred years ago, there was a news client that had a "look up
in DejaNews" feature built in. (The one in my remote recollect, it was
some weird client, that in part was for Compuserve message boards, I
forget its name...)
It strikes me that developers of current news clients could make their
users pretty pleased to provide a send-(MID)-to-Google plugin.
Send-MID, and maybe a send-Subject choice too.
I think I might like such a thing best if it didn't even demand use
of an extra browser, but instead could optionally provide a barebones
viewer addon for the purpose, based either on the MS Browser Control
or on the Mozilla Control.

create aliases for IE, so I can
type (copy and paste) in the IE addressbar :
g1 3fb86fd6%40news.iconz.co.nz for showing the single message
gall 3fb86fd6%40news.iconz.co.nz for showing the whole thread
For my IE version 6 (but it was different in older versions) :
key : HKU\UID\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchUrl\g1
value : http://groups.google.com/groups?&selm=%s
key : HKU\UID\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchUrl\gall
value : http://groups.google.com/groups?&threadm=%s
But I guess I'm not telling you anything new.

With Xnews, if a URI is clicked (or just a MID if it is
unambiguous) but the message is not on the server, it will offer to
search Google Groups. It passes the info to the default browser. I
think Gravity does something similar, and I think Dialog has a more
extensive advanced Google searching feature. AFAIK, all of them call
the default browser to search.
I think Dialog will also do the 'send-subject' thing, but I am not
sure.
