sorry did not get your message yesterday could you please repeat

Follow Boomers link.
While we are on the subject, have you heard of "Pricelessware".
No, OK then-

What is Pricelessware?

The Pricelessware List reflects the programs favored by participants in
the alt.comp.freeware newsgroup ; it is not an exhaustive list of the
best available Freeware. Most of the listings are well-known programs,
but there are some hard-to-find goodies to be discovered. Although most
categories will list only 1 or 2 selections, a few will list 3-4
programs.

Definitely worth a bookmark. :)

One can make Google Groups links shorter, they do not need all the
information from that URL.

For showing a single message:
http://groups.google.com/groups?&selm=<Message-ID>

For showing a whole thread:
http://groups.google.com/groups?&threadm=<Message-ID of initial posting>

In this case, the URL can be shortened to:
http://groups.google.com/groups?&[email protected]

- This way, a Google Groups URL usually fits in one line. Just an
additional (and off topic) information, but probably useful for those
which do not like this third service URL forwards.

bye,

[moving from URL essentials, to daydreams -]

About a hundred years ago, there was a news client that had a "look up
in DejaNews" feature built in. (The one in my remote recollect, it was
some weird client, that in part was for Compuserve message boards, I
forget its name...)

It strikes me that developers of current news clients could make their
users pretty pleased to provide a send-(MID)-to-Google plugin. Send-MID,
and maybe a send-Subject choice too.

I think I might like such a thing best if it didn't even demand use
of an extra browser, but instead could optionally provide a barebones
viewer addon for the purpose, based either on the MS Browser Control
or on the Mozilla Control.

The best thing I could come up with: create aliases for IE, so I can
type (copy and paste) in the IE addressbar :

g1 3fb86fd6%40news.iconz.co.nz for showing the single message
gall 3fb86fd6%40news.iconz.co.nz for showing the whole thread

For my IE version 6 (but it was different in older versions) :

key : HKU\UID\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchUrl\g1
value : http://groups.google.com/groups?&selm=%s

key : HKU\UID\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchUrl\gall
value : http://groups.google.com/groups?&threadm=%s

But I guess I'm not telling you anything new. :)

My wish above is wishes-are-horses, since it's focus is development of a
news client. I've been using Agent since '96, and this software has stayed
unchanged really, so have been well trained to not sit on the edge of my
seat for the "next enhancement." X-News, I gather the author is no longer
too intensively involved. Remains, for major player, just one, which isn't
one I'm familiar with, the 40tude, for whether such an addon would ever be
a remote possibility.

So the realistic thing is to look in the kind of direction you bring up.

The second part, SearchUrl setting in the registy, yes, familiar with.
Also, several of the tabbed browsers from the MSIE family, have some
interesting search customization features built in, and I've not even
explored all of it there. Your first part, I'm going to have to read
through a few of times, no lightbulb has yet clicked on....

Just I still like the daydream: simple viewer panel add-on for the news
reader. As is already offered in some mail clients. Something basic
and light, and integrated as a window right along with.

Gravity has something like that, and Xnews, and Dialog.
With Xnews, if a URI is clicked (or just a MID if it is
unambiguous) but the message is not on the server, it will offer to
search Google Groups. It passes the info to the default browser. I
think Gravity does something similar, and I think Dialog has a more
extensive advanced Google searching feature. AFAIK, all of them call
the default browser to search.
It strikes me that developers of current news clients could make

I think Dialog will also do the 'send-subject' thing, but I am not
sure.

About browsers, Mozilla Firebird's 'quicksearch' feature makes it
pretty easy to set up the kind of thing you and Sietse are
discussing. For example, I have one keyed to 'acfauth'.

<http://groups.google.com/groups?num=100&as_scoring=d&as_ugroup=alt.comp.freeware&as_uauthors=%s>

So typing 'acfauth omega' in the address bar brings up
<http://groups.google.com/groups?num=100&as_scoring=d&as_ugroup=alt.comp.freeware&as_uauthors=omega>.

Thae same kind of thing can be done for MIDs, and the only frustrating
limitation is that only one parameter can be passed in this way.

Well geeeeeee. So this feature is already about and active. (What can I
say? Obviously a lot has happened in news readers since I last took a
good tour...a century ago, Compuserv era. I suppose my experience with
Winvn might be a bit dated, too. 8-o )
