I think I'm calling it the right thing, when you hover the mouse pointer
over an icon in the system tray or taskbar, a yellow pop up comes up and
says what that icon represents. Well, I have my taskbar set up to autohide.
It won't 'reappear' unless I press the Windows key on my keyboard. The
workaround for this is to have the taskbar also setup to be also 'always on
top'. But when I'm it's set up like that, the balloon tips go behind the
taskbar. It's not always been like this, and I'm not sure what I was doing
when it start this behavior.

a. does anyone understand what I'm saying? ... and
b. does anyone know how to fix it so my autohide acts as it's supposed to?

Thanks,

I got dubbing around with tweakui and the problem corrected itself ...

Things that make you go 'hmmm'.

Spike9458;
What'd you do? I'd like to know. I only know of a fix that
works temporarily.

Well ... I know the term 'dubbing' isn't technical, but it means I did a few
things without writing them down. I believe all I did was check or uncheck
the Enable Balloon Tips box, and click apply. I just went in now, and the
box is unchecked ... but the balloon tips still work, but my taskbar also
still works properly.

I was in Tweakui for XP. You can get that here:

It's a known bug to everone but MS who dnies it exists. It was first seen with WinME and it's intermittent.

Spike9458;
Thanks for the reply. I change Lock the Taskbar and Keep the Taskbar on top.
Then change 'em back. Works for a while. Then you have to do it again.

David;
That's nice to know. I can't rid myself of any of the Balloon or Info Tips.
As long as I have the damn things, they should work correctly.
I've done all the Registry changes.
What I've done to limp by is change the color to white, instead of that god awful yellow.
And I changed the duration of the display.

I reported it during the ME and XP betas. Both times the issue was closed as "unable to duplicate".

But since IE4 was released MS has been unable to fix focus problems. This is merely another focus problem.

Untill MS staff start using their own programs these problems will continue. MS staff are of courze credited in the Linux credits which show ehere their alliegance lies.

Thanks for the info Wes, so far mine has lasted a couple of days ... I'll
post back again if it messes up again.

"unable to duplicate". That's a good one. :o)

Disabling or Enabling Balloon Tips has nothing to do with this. What
changes it for some users, is the Taskbar Settings : Hide and/or Always on
Top.

It falling behind the Taskbar after a length of time does happen, which a
logoff or reboot corrects. Not, that this should be deemed necessary of
course, but that is just the way it is for now. :o(

As for not being able to rid of Balloon Tips, that setting via TweakUI
disables those that hover the Notification Area only, not the Taskbar or
Quick Launch area.

Hello Kelly;
With the tips falling behind the Taskbar, in my case, I have Keep the Taskbar on top and
Lock the taskbar. I don't have to reboot to temporarily fix it.
I just uncheck those two | Apply | OK. And recheck them.

Somebody was going to hang me with a new rope and you know what happens then.
Well, I was just taking the opportunity. :o)

With my version of XP, disabled Balloon Tips is an oxymoron.
None of mine are disabled. :-(

In reference to Balloon Tips being disabled, I'm talking about the following
Registry settings.
=================
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced
EnableBalloonTips REG_DWORD 0x00000000 (0)

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced
FolderContentsInfoTip REG_DWORD 0x00000000 (0)

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced
ShowInfoTip REG_DWORD 0x00000000 (0)

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced
StartButtonBalloonTip REG_DWORD 0x00000000 (0)

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\tips
Show REG_DWORD 0x00000000 (0)

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\TrayNotify

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
NoSMBalloonTip REG_DWORD 0x00000001 (1)

I must be missing something.
It has been my observation that we all have our XP crosses to bear.

You are too funny, Wes. :o)

Run this edit and let me know how it goes:

Disable Balloon Tips or Disable All (Row 11)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Disable All includes: Balloon Tips, Folder Contents Info Tips, Explorer
Pop-Ups, Show Info Tips, Start Menu and Notification Area.

To use the Regedit: Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it
and answer yes to the import prompt. REG files can be viewed in Notepad by
right clicking on the file and selecting Edit.

I try, Kelly, I most certainly try. :D
Been there, done that.
I'm wearing the T-shirt right now.

Well, I figured what the hey. It won't take long.
Re-downloaded disableall.reg (You never know) | Merged it | Rebooted |
Was disappointed again.

Ever since installing XP last August I have messed around trying
to disable Balloon tips. I finally give up.
8-O
Thank you any way.

Kelly,

I guess I have a unique instance then, because rebooting didn't correct
anything. Checking and unchecking the boxes in the taskbar settings didn't
fix anything either. It wasn't till I went in to tweakui and checked and
unchecked a box in there that things got back to normal. Either way, I'm all
set now.

Did you manually check the registry to see that each edit had been applied?
Is save settings on exit applied? Can the tips you are trying to disable -

If your reply is: Yes, Yes and Yes, send me the T-Shirt. :o)

Hi Jim,

Are you still leaning toward the Balloon Tips checkbox or still aren't sure?
If you can't reproduce the flaw, the next time it happens, make notes and
post them here? :o)

Hi Kelly;
