Hi,
As the subject line says, I am baffled. My previous inquiry (new nic cannot
get ip address).
I did as suggested and entered ip address statically (along with other info
like subnet mask, gateway etc.). The computer now accesses the
network/internet effortlessly.
My question is : why will the computer not pick up the information
automatically like my other computers? I want to give this computer to my
cousin (who does not have a network) and am concerned that once i give it to
him, it will not access the interner via his isdn connection. His isdn
supplier will not give out static addresses.
Is this just a functionality of my router/system?

Thank you for enlightening me on this issue.

many thanks for those who read this

your problem seems similar as to the "static IP
addressing" post on this same page. If you get an
169.254._._ IP address means you cannot connect to a DHCP
server somehow. Make sure in Network Properties of you Lan
in the TCP/IP properties that both IP and DNS are set to
dynamic. the do a releas/renew from command line.
goodluck and repost what you found out ok.

Congratulations on getting your network up and running,
albeit on a staic address. I'm wondering if it is
something to do with the node type now.Normally, when a
computer uses DHCP, it sends out a broadcast message to
any machine it can in order to find a dhcp server (rather
than directing it to a specific machine).I wonder now if
for some reason it isn't broadcasting and hence can't
find the DHCP server in the first place, but when
statically configured, it knows exactly where to send the
data (i.e default gateway)

Under the network card property settings is the speed of
the card set to Auto as some network cards just do not
auto negotiate the network connection. If your router is
10/100 set the card to 100mb half duplex should that be an
issue try 10mb half duplex rember to set back to DHCP in
your network settings in win98 run winipcfg from the run
command hit more info then do release all. If windows
NT /2000 /Xp go to a dos box run "ipconfig /all" have you
got a new IP address from your router ? other commands
are ipconfig /release ( this releases your current ip
info ) ipconfig /renew ( renews your information )
get back to me if you need more info
