Suggest you take it back to the store and get another one.
They usually replace defective software on a like-for-like basis.

It won't work because your key is specific to your disk. Try
http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/xpfaq for more answers or go to
www.microsoft.com for direct microsoft tech support.

No, the Product Keys are not specific to the CD.
But the key will only work on a CD of the same type.
If the OP has retail Windows XP Pro SP-2 full, an upgrade CD will not work.
An OEM CD also will not work etc.

Have you been to the point where you are asked for the key?
If so, it fails immediately with an error that plainly tells you there is a
problem with the key.
Look very closely.
S-5, O-0, B-8 and others look alike.
Have someone else try, sometimes another set of eyes and fingers can get it
correct.

If you have a friend with another identical CD, borrow it.
But it must be the same.
If you have retail Windows XP Pro SP-2 full, that is what you need.
No upgrade, OEM etc.

You should be able to return defective software like for like.
