Based on that discussion, I would run Ad-awareSE from
http://www.lavasoft.de/software/adaware/ followed by Spybot S&D from
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/spybotsd/index.html With both programs
you should check for updates before using the program.

It sounds like removing this may damage your winsock files and make it
impossible for IE to connect to the web. You should have these winsock
repair tools downloaded and ready to use before using Ad-aware and Spybot.
