Bad security setting?

I'm using Windows XP and IE6. When I enter a username and
password into a Windows popup password box and hit ENTER,
the browser automatically closes. Is this just a bad
setting, or do I have a problem?

There's a good possibility that this is being caused by a third-party
program (adware, spyware, parasite).
