First, can someone provide me with the link to the page detailing the use of the Microsoft memory diagnostic? I had it, cannot now find it, and cannot seem to find it on any microsoft page.

Running XP pro sp1a, w/ 756 MB RAM, ASUS motherboard, with AMD Athlon +1900 NOT overclocked.

1.) Systems just hangs 'out of the blue' but not giving a blue screen.

2.) System crashes with blue screen, but cannot read info on screen, and yes, I'm running the most up to date signed drivers for both video card and monitor.

Both activities above mainfest mainly when accessing my boot/programs disk when using:
Norton AntiVirus 2003
SpyBot1.2
forcing a 'scan' on the indexing service
Registry Mechanic

None of the above programs will sucessfully complete. Norton and ZoneLabs firewall have been up and running for long before problem manifested itself.

This used to be fun in the days of the Burroughs B3500.

Thanks

Thomas

I would look in Event Viewer at the logged errors.

1. To open Event Viewer, click Start, click Control Panel, double-click Administrative Tools, double-click Event Viewer and select System for system errors or Application for application errors. Look for Error in the Type column and double click on Error to reveal a Description of the error. This can be copied by using Clipboard Viewer (see later).

2. Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you should double click for further information and you can copy using copy and paste.
http://go.microsoft.com/fw.link/events.asp
(Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only)

3. For some errors you will find "+ Related Knowledge Base Article", which if double clicked takes you to the Knowledge Base Article containing a suggested solution.

There always seems to be a step 2 but not always a step 3.

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports (Step 1). Run Event Viewer and double click on the error you want to copy. In the window which appears is a button resembling two pages. Double click the button and close Event Viewer. Now start your message ( email )and do a paste into the body of the message. This will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error Report complete with links into the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from Event Viewer. It can be helpful to place a shortcut to Event Viewer on your Desktop.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the link to the memory diagnostic. I tried any number of searches at Microsoft: 'mtinst.exe', 'memory diagnostic', 'memory test', etc, to no avail. I was called away from the computer as it was booting today and when I came back to the 'welcome screen' it had frozen. So I am thinking: hardware problem somewhere. I'll start pulling cards and reseating, or replacing to see if I can snare the little gremlin

Again, Thanks for your response
