Hi, i recently had a number of trokans and other spyware, malware and viruses on my emachines pc...
i purchased and ran spyware doctor, and it said that it removed everything.

I then moved over several files from another uninfected pc, then my pc turned itself off.
When i turned it back on, it comes up with

"the application or DLL C:\windows\system32\wowfx.dll is not a valid windows image. Please check this against your installation diskette."

amongst many other 'bad image' error messages.

When i eventually get onto the desktop, it runs C:\windows\shell.exe
and i keep getting a fake windows security alert telling me i need to install some kind of protection.
I don't have a clue how to fix this....Any help would be much appreciated
=]

also not sure if i posted this in the correct place....Thanks.

Hello!
It may be connected to the viruses,as many of them may cause troubles with registry etc.
install hijackthis

  • Download HJTInstall.exe to your Desktop.
  • Doubleclick HJTInstall.exe to install it.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
  • Click on Install.
  • It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
  • Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
  • Copy/Paste the log to your next reply please.
Don't use the Analyse This button, its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.
Don't have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even essential.

thanks for the advice, here's the log file

G man... Too man nasties, I'm afraid this will take much time and sacrifice.
I'm not clearly sure where to start! Let's start by default:
Please, open HijackThis and choose Do a system scan only.
Place checks next to these entries and click Fix:
  • F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\shell.exe
  • F2 - REG:system.ini: UserInit=C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe,C:\WINDO WS\system32\ntos.exe,
  • O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SystemSv12] C:\WINDOWS\system32\newmaxxsv234.exe
  • O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [runtime.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\runtime.exe
  • O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [startdrv] C:\WINDOWS\Temp\startdrv.exe
  • O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Printer] C:\WINDOWS\system32\printer.exe
  • O7 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Pol icies\System, DisableRegedit=1
  • O20 - AppInit_DLLs: C:\WINDOWS\system32\wowfx.
  • O23 - Service: ZZZsvc_lich - Unknown owner - C:\lich.exe (file missing)
Now when you fixed it,
Spybot Search & Destroy

Spybot S&D is available from here.

Download and Install Spybot S&D (if you haven't already), accept the Default Settings
In the Menu Bar at the top of the Spybot window you will see Mode.
Make certain that 'Default Mode has a check mark beside it.
Close ALL windows except Spybot S&D
Click the button to 'Search for Updates' then download and install the updates.
-----------------------------
Next click the button 'Check for Problems'
When Spybot is complete, it will be showing 'RED' entries bold 'BLACK' entries and 'GREEN' entries in the window
Make certain there is a check mark beside all of the RED entries ONLY.
Choose 'Fix Selected Problems' and allow Spybot to fix the RED entries.

NEXT!

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
Please be sure to print out this instruction as you know you will not be able to connect to Internet while in safe mode!!
In safe mode also do the next:

Now when you've done it all, go to My Computer. Local DIsc C:>WINDOWS>System32 and find some of these files and delete them!
shell.exe
ntos.exe
newmaxxsv24.exe
runtime.exe
startdrv.exe
printer.exe
lich.exe =( this one is maybe not there, so screw it)

Another tip: Maybe you need to show hidden files to find and delete these files! ( If you don't know how to show hidden files:
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • After the new window appears select the View tab.
  • Put a checkmark in the checkbox labeled Display the contents of system folders.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders section select the radio button labeled Show hidden files and folders.
  • Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide file extensions for known file types.
  • Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide protected operating system files.
  • Press the Apply button and then the OK button and shutdown My Computer.
  • Now your computer is configured to show all hidden files.
)

I've done all you've said..but i cant seem to find these files even after ive done the hidden file thing

shell.exe ( there is shell32.dll & shell.dll)
ntos.exe ( there is ntoskrnl.exe )
newmaxxsv24.exe ( there is newdev.dll )
runtime.exe ( there is runas.exe, rundll32.exe & runonce.exe)
startdrv.exe
lich.exe ( there is licdll.dll )

thanks for your help by the way! :D

Though there is one other things, my pc seems to be constantly loading, e.g the mouse has constantly got the loading symbol.

Don't worry, good if u haven't found it.
The thing is you had to post a SDFix log with new HijackThis log to see what's left behind. Not all infections are able to clean in just one post.

Here is that report ( I hope its the one you wanted!), sorry it took me so long to post my internet is running slow!

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)

Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe.
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

**If the tool fails to launch from the Desktop, please move SmitfraudFix.exe directly to the root of the system drive (usually C:), and launch from there.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Also!

If you already have Combofix, please delete this copy and download it again as it's being updated regularly.
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.
If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.
If that happened we want to know, and also what process you had to end.

So in the next post I wanna see SmitfraudFix log, Combofix log and Hijackthis log.
Long and hard yep, I told you it's gonna be that way!

i think this is what you want! :D

could you help me more please!!

Hello again!
Ok, since you already had virus problems, I suspect your BSOD ( blue screen of death ) is caused by HexDoor virus ( which is one of the links Mucks gave you ).
1. Let's suppose it's a virus. Please follow these steps:
2. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
3. Locate the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogin\Notify
4. Locate and delete any entries in the registry subkey that reference "drct16" or "draw32".

For example, you may see entries that are similar to the following:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify\drct16
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify\draw32
5. Insert the Windows XP installation CD, and then restart the computer from the CD.
6. At the Welcome to Setup screen, press R (repair) to start the Windows Recovery Console.
7. Select the number that corresponds to the Windows installation that you want to repair. This number is typically 1.
8. If prompted, type the administrator password. If an administrator password does not exist, press ENTER.
9. At the command prompt, move to the C:\Windows\System32 folder. For example, type cd C:\Windows\System32.
10. Use the ren (rename) command to rename the following files as shown. Remember to press ENTER after each command. If you see a "File not found" message, move to the next file in the list.ren 1.a3d 1.a3d.bad
ren cm.dll cm.dll.bad
ren cz.dll cz.dll.bad
ren draw32.dll draw32.dll.bad
ren drct16.dll drct16.dll.bad
ren dt163.dt dt163.dt.bad
ren fltr.a3d fltr.a3d.bad
ren hm.sys hm.sys.bad
ren hz.dll hz.dll.bad
ren hz.sys hz.sys.bad
ren i.a3d i.a3d.bad
ren in.a3d in.a3d.bad
ren klo5.sys klo5.sys.bad
ren klogini.dll klogini.dll.bad
ren memlow.sys memlow.sys.bad
ren mszx23.exe mszx23.exe.bad

ren vdnt32.sys vdnt32.sys.bad
ren w32tm.exe w32tm.exe.bad
ren WD.SYS WD.SYS.bad
ren winlow.sys winlow.sys.bad
ren wmx.a3d wmx.a3d.bad
ren wz.dll wz.dll.bad
ren wz.sys wz.sys.bad

If you want to delete these files when you are finished, type del *.bad.
11. Remove the Windows XP installation CD, and then type Exit to restart the computer.
12. When the computer restarts, click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
13. Locate and delete the following registry subkeys and any entries that may be present under each subkey. If any registry subkeys from this list are not present, move to the next subkey in the list.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\vdmt16
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\vdnt32
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\winlow
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\memlow

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\vdmt16

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\ENUM\ROOT\LEGACY_VDNT32
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\ENUM\ROOT\LEGACY_WINLOW
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\ENUM\ROOT\LEGACY_MEMLOW
14. Locate and delete any entries that contain the Mszx23.exe file name under the following registry subkeys:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices
15. Quit Registry Editor.
16. Make sure that your antivirus and anti-spyware programs are updated with the latest definitions, and then perform a complete system scan.

Good luck!
