I don't know if anyone can help me with this one but here goes. I need to
copy an XP volume in its entirety. The HDD is failing mechanically and I
have about 50 GB of programs and info. I would sure not like to reload all
of this stuff, if I can find it again. In to old days we used to do an
Xcopy and delete the win.com file and all would fine. XP is a dif cat
though and I can't find any way to do the same thing. Can anyone help?? or
am I doomed to the big reload!!

Thx

Norton Ghost version 14 - has a 30 day trial available
(Trial does not allow you to create a Bootable Restore CD AFAK)

True Image 2009 - has a 15 day trial version available,
(Trial version can create a Restore/Rescue Media CD, but I have not verified
this yet)

Also copying disk to disk with Norton Ghost

Also: Your new hard drive may have a CD with copy/cloning utility.

It might also be the case that hd problems may cause problems with any clone
copy when you come to restore it to a new hd. It just happened to my sys, so
I had to bite the bullet and spent two days reinstalling, mind you data was
stored in two external locations so no problem there

Mike,

There is a program called Driveimage XML that is available from
http://www.runtime.org for free. It will make an image of your hard drive
but you need an external USB drive to copy it too. After the back up is
completed you can use a bard disk to reload the image to a new drive and
everything will be just as it was.

Hope this helps,

Andy

Xcopy will not put boot files where they need to be.

You can use cloning software, but if the drive is failing, you probably
can't rely on the integrity of the files. Get the data off while you still
can, and take a list of what is installed.

You can use the free trial of Acronis TrueImage. Install that to another
system, then attach the failing drive and the new one, and clone - choose
manual, so you can adapt to the likely larger size of the new drive.

Cloning will likely fail if there are disk errors.

Do not run that drive any more than is absolutely necessary.
