I am posting this to this forum because the mbr of ntfs can't be seen with a
fat os. I have a hard drive that is showing up in the bios at post initially
but will not load the windows xp pro operating system that is on it.
When the machine is restarted after the unsuccessful loading of the
operating system the drive is no longer found in the bios. I initially
suspected a virus but I have heard clicking noises from the drive when the
computer is first turned on so I am not sure if it is the harddrive that is
failing, or a nasty virus on the mbr/boot record.
Any insight into this would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance

My PC with two hard drives had one drive fail with clicking noises. It
could not be a virus because it is an isolated PC with no external
connections. XP pro loaded after a hard reset so I ran CHKDSK C: /R
from the command prompt. It found and fixed numerous problems. It
failed again after about a week so I changed the drive. So, if you can
get into a load state to run CHKDSK then give it a try.

Sounds like a ball bearing is broke. The only advise here is to replace
the drive as soon as possible.

If the bios doesn't see it, you've got a hardware problem. And the clicking
noise likely points to the hard drive itself.

You can try what TechRepublic calls the 1 2 3 method.....
1, Remove the drive from the system and gently tap it with the butt of a
screwdriver new the center spindle, the theory behind this is that if the
drive is suffering stiction this may loosen it.

2. drop it........not from the roof! ;) But hold it about 2 feet over a
padded surface, like a carpet, and drop it several times.

3 Remove the drive from your system insert it in a ziplock bag and put it in
your freezer for a couple of hours then remove it from the freezer and bag
reinstall it in your system and copy the data off it.

If any of these work they're likely to work only for a short time. So be
sure you have the means to remove any data you want to keep before
reinstalling the drive.
