Intel Pro 1000MT Gigabit Network Adapter.
One of the cards we have is giving me strange indications. It will not
install on W2K Pro or Linux but another card installed at the same time
is reading fine. The diagnostic software that comes with it is telling
me it's bad also. I have also moved the card to different PCI slots.
The weird thing is when hooked up to a Gigabit switch the lights on the
switch and the lights on the card indicate connection and Gbit speed.
Is the connection a pass-through type and the switch is seeing itself
or is something else going on?

Just because a portion of the card works enough to cause a
"link" light, that may not in itself mean the entire card
works properly.

Likely the card is bad but it might be possible the card
would work in another system? I'd try it in another system
and if that doesn't work, return it.
