About a month ago, I installed a new hard drive and a new copy of XPHome
SP2.
As I recall, there were several files that were "skipped" because they could
not be read but I continued, hoping for the best.
The installation went fine and I installed programs etc. and didn't have any
problems.
However, I installed a USB2 5 port card and it keeps coming up as "new
hardware" but not correctly. Each time it comes up with different
variations. Anyway, I decided to use System File Checker from the CD (after
changing to the correct (changed) drive letter). Although it took a long
time, it was going fine but then came up with errors - and I had to reboot.
The event viewer showed errors (I believe in trying to access certain
files - not really familiar with all of this yet.)
I then tried to use the method of copying the i386 folder to the hard drive
to use that for the checker. At first went fine, but towards the end, again
came up with problems saying files could not be read. I have tried cleaning
the disk and the hard drive, but it did no good, and the event viewer came
up with similar errors.
Am I making the correct assumption that the CD is bad? If so, what is the
correct method for getting a replacement? How difficult is that to get? A
call to Microsoft?
Will that count as one of my "2 allowable calls" to Microsoft?
Will I be able to use the new CD to reinstall without losing everything I
have currently installed, or will a reformat be necessary?
TIA
