Can anybody recommend a good backup program (preferrably
downloadable) which would enable me to backup to CD. The
standard backup program with xp only lets me backup to
floppy disc.

Brian when you need to save the backup you will automatically be offered the
floppy drive. If you click on the browse button when you are asked where to
save the file you should get backup trying to access the floppy drive. Press
cancel on the floppy dialog box that appears and you should get the 'Save
as' dialog box. Type the name you want to save the file as and then save it
to your desktop. Once it is saved you can then use your CD burning software
to copy it to a CD. When you need to reinstall the backup move the file from
the CD back to the Desktop and then select the backup from there.
Well that's the principle, anyway. I haven't tried it myself. It might be
worth trying it with a small file first to see if it works properly.

Hi John,

Thank you so much for taking the trouble to reply. I've
tried what you said and whilst it works, as soon as I try
to burn the backup to CD I get an error message saying
that the CD is not large enough to take all the data.
What I really need is a way of burning to several CD's
and for the computer to prompt me when one CD is full to
insert a 2nd and 3rd one etc until al the data is saved

Would you have any ideas on how this can be achieved?

Many thanks,

Brian

Brian, Personally the only application that i ever use is Powerquest's Drive
Image. As you are probably aware, this application backs up all of your hard
drive. Another one is Norton Ghost (symantec) However, i much prefer Drive
Image. There is a facility with Drive Image to copy the 'image' to CD. Once
again, however, i much prefer to image the drive to a either a second
partition or a second hard drive.
