I have had my system for about two years and I regularly
read the official Windows XP magazine for hints and
tips.I purchased my computer(my first) as a complete
package with Windows pre installed and so did have not
have the Windows installation disc.I am trying to find if
there is any other way of obtaining the backup utility
that is incorporated within the installation disc.As you
can imagine two years down the line there is a lot now on
the system which would be a nightmare to have to re-
install if there was a system crash, not to mention all
the potential for losing stuff in generall.I hope to be
hearing from somebody who has had the same concerns and
found a way around it soon, cheers.

Hi Yeti,

you can try and run backup by clicking start -> run -> here enter "ntbackup"
(without " ") and click OK... You can make a backup into a file on your
local hard drive. Once done, you can burin this file on a CD and keep it in
a safe place or you can e.g. copy it to another drive (if you don't have
tape drive).

I hope this helps,

Mike

If you don't have an XP CD, you can download ntbackup.msi at

You will be better off purchasing a decent third party app that can create a
full system image of your computer settings, installed apps and data. There
are several good choices including BootIt NG, Norton Ghost or Drive Image
2003. The NTBackup program that install on XP Home of practically useless
from making system backups.

"Backup" kinda sucks, no matter what utility you use. Better have your My
Docu. folders neatly organized and just "drag" (copy) them on a CDRW or
DVDRW - don't forget the email folders, address book, and favorites. Copyed
folders are easier to transfer and/or restore than backup files when it
comes to documents.

As for imaging the HDD... programs, drivers, SP's, WU's are constantly
upgraded; so, with rare exceptions, in a few months your .img file becomes
obsolite. There are some free utilities (Karen's, for ex.) to synchronize
automatically the HDD and CDRW folders - such that only newer files are
added.
