I want to backup (not just copy files over) to a CD. Does Windows XP have a
backup utility that allows this? I can't get it to work.

Do you have XP Home Edition? Backup is installed automatically on
XP Professional, but not on XP Home. If you have the complete XP
Home CD, find backup on the CD, in \ValueAdd\MSFT\NTBACKUP and
install it yourself by doubleclicking the file ntbackup.msi.

If you don't have an XP CD, you can download ntbackup.msi at
http://www.onecomputerguy.com/software/ntbackup.msi

The backup program in Windows XP will back up to a CD ONLY if the CD is
formatted with packet writing software such as Direct CD, HP DLA, etc.

Once the CD is formatted you should see it in the backup program.

I should have said that I was partly successful. Once the CD is full,
however, it stops. I am looking for something that prompts me to insert a
new CD and continue. Does ntbackup do that?

No, it does not have the capability to span CDs. If you want to continue
using ntbackup, break up your backup to several data sets so that each one
will fit on a single CD. Or switch to a third party backup program that
will span mutiple disks.

If you want a Windows program so you may have control over what is
written to the media (cd or dvd) AND the ability to restore individual
files, do a search for Backup MyPC which is written by Veritas and
sold by Stomp... I think it is at version 5 these days

If you want a NO FRILLS program which makes an IMAGE of a hard drive
for disaster recovery, go here http://www.bootitng.com and download
the test version to see if it will work with your hardware

I've used Backup MyPC and "Bing" and to make a simple image of an
entire hard drive I prefer the "Bing" software... runs from ONE boot
disk (Backup MyPC requires making 6 disks to be able to do a restore
from the actual cd/dvd media) AND it will even make your cd/dvd into a
bootable disc so you may boot/restore directly from the media

I'll second the recommendation for Image in BING. I've also purchased their
other program "Image for Windows." It's very easy to use and the restore
procedure so far (knock on wood), has worked perfectly for me.
