I recently purchased a vista system with only one hard drive. It has a
backup system which looks like a virtual hard drive. It advertises that it
is a way to keep from losing ones files in case of a drive failure. How can
this be ? If a hard drive fails, then all files are lost. How does this
backup system protect me?

It cannot be, so it's likely your not understanding what it's doing. What is
the name of this backup system?
