I notice that in backup there is the option to
"shadow
copy" could? someone enlighten me re this option
Shadow Copy is a service that runs on the computer
and allows it to back up files that are "in use";
being used by the operating system, background
tasks, things like that. They are programs the PC
starts, not you, and normally a file in use can
not be copied; windows will just refuse to do it.
But: With what's called the VSS (Volume Shadow
Services) running, a program is able to make a
copy of a program that is being used.
It's used by all good backup programs that can
back up the operating system.
I notice you've been given a link or two that
should help understand precisely what's going on.
As long as VSS is running (and it will be since
it's on by default and you have not stopped that
service from running on purpose) you normally do
not have to worry about it in any way unless a
program asks you whether you want to use it or
not. If one is not sure whether it's needed or
not, answering YES would not hurt anything even if
it wasn't needed.
