I noted today that there is a backup front end that I have not created. How
did this happen?

Did the front-end crash at any point today? When possible, a backup is
produced automatically when you open a database after a serious issue occurs
(iirc).

You may want to make certain there are no corruption issues in any of the
VBA in your forms/reports/modules, or in any of the back-end data that might
have been accessed at the time of the possible front-end crash.

I would make yet another backup of the front-end, and then attempt a compact
and repair. Do the same for the back-end. For now, we will just hope that
the C&Rs perform without issue. Otherwise, things can get quite a bit
trickier.

Hi Jeff,

Thanks for the info...a related question: why would I get disk or network
error? I was getting this right before the crash.

Check the database Options. Do you have "Compact on Close" selected? This may
be creating the backup.

Yikes, that's exactly what it sounds like. A previous laptop would
give me that all the time unless I pushed in the network cable firmly
and didn't wiggle it.

There are many causes to this problem but they are almost always
hardware related. I'd start by unplugging the network connection to
your PC and the wall and plugging it back in again.

If that doesn't solve it then get your IT department involved.
