I can't seem to run windows vista backup. It keeps saying it's due to an
internal error, it then says it can't do a backup while running on batteries
but I'm not it's a desktop machine on mains power!

Any suggestions as to the problem and solution.

Thanks

Andy

Is your BIOS up-to-date? This could be one cause. I remember seeing this
error during the beta...let me dig around in email and see if I can find
more info.

I did find a bug for this but it was fixed prior to RTM. Can you confirm
whether you are running the RTM version?

I'm waiting to hear back from a developer. I don't know if there are any
workarounds I can give...but I might need some more information from you.
I'll let you know when I hear something.

The one thing I would add is that the machines mains supply is plugged into a
UPS. I am not running any monitoring software or anything like that.

Even so I can't see why this would affect doing a backup.

Thanks

Andy

Backup won't work when the machine is on battery power, so that's why Backup
is affected. I'm waiting to hear back getting more info from you to help
debug this problem.

Andy, can you reproduce the issue when your computer is not plugged into the
UPS device? This could be the issue...

Jill, the PC has no way of "knowing" it's plugged into a UPS, unless the UPS
data lead is connected and the driver software installed.

If not, all it sees is normal AC on the power leads.

This was my point, there would be no way the computer would know it was
plugged into the UPS.

However, looking at device manager HID UPS Battery is listed, why I don't
know, I can assure you there is know way for it to know.

Perhaps I should disable it.

Looking at it's properties it says

Location: on American Power Conversion USB UPS.

This makes no sense to me, what does it mean?

It's a UK machine on UK power, no US conversion involved.

My device is an APC Smart UPS.

Andy

I see, I didn't equate APC and American Power Conversion :(

Well I wonder how it knows, unless something about the power
line tells it.

Either way I can't see why a UPS should stop me using Vista backup.

I can't comment to Vista's new backup scheme but if it isn't
significantly better than XP's, I'd get a 3rd party solution.
First, one needs an imager for the C:\ partition, which Vista may
not have, then one needs to define exactly what needs to be backed
up, to what media(s), etc. e.g., full backup, incremental, simple
file copy, etc. Also, Windows settings, the Registry or whatever it
is now called, etc. your E-mail, IE7 favorites, etc. should be
separetely backed up to provide an easy restore process. Whether
native Vista can do all of these things and many more is an IF, so
I'd suggest you examine what it is you're trying to do along with
finding a solution to the technical problem you're having.

Well I can't believe it. I've just run Vista Backup and it worked no problems.

I've made no changes to the computer and I still have the UPS plugged in.

I just thought, give it another go and that was that.

Andy, I have a utility that I'd like you to run that will give us more info
about your power/battery situation. If you will contact me via email (remove
"online" from my address), I'll provide the utility.
