This isn't really a purely WinXP question, so I welcome suggestions for
other groups.

Right now, I back up my desktop's hard disk with monthly Ghosts and daily
backup software for data files. The backups are stored on an external USB
driven hard drive. This drive sits on top of the desktop computer.

I'd like to have a bigger physical separation, in case of fire or theft
compromising affecting the desktop. I believe the USB wire limit is about
twenty feet. Is there a way to do this with a wireless connection? If so,
where would I look for information?

Sure, using a network would also benefit a backup strategy.
Contact a networking specialist or consultant. The basic
rule is to always have 2 copies of everything important,
kept in different locations. We backup to an off-site server
and physically to 2 different external HD's.

I know what you mean. I work from home and, although I have good
backup in place (to a fileserver), yet I've seriously considered
building a backyard fireproof computer vault to house my backup data.

I guess you know you're a fanatic when the thought of your house
burning down first makes you worry about your data. ;)
