Can anyone tell me if the backup utility in XP Accessories
can be used to backup up partitions of files to an
external hard drive and then be used for restore if
required. Backup media is a Maxtor 300LE external hard
drive.

Yes. I do it all the time, to a second internal HDD.
But it can't backup to CD/DVD directly.
