My computer system, which runs in Win2000, has been running well.
The system is some 4 years old. I am worried in case the HD should
give way on account of age. So I would like to have a system to back
up regularly. Also, I would like to have a full system back up so that
when I do upgrade, I may be able to transfer the whole system, programs
and all so that I will not have to go thru the hassle of loading up the
programs one by one etc.

Drive C: which is 19 Gb in size, has 5 Gb used and 14 Gb available
The 2nd drive which is 12 Gb in size, has 2 Gb used and 10 Gb available.
I also have a CD-RW drive.

Please also guide me regarding the software to use for backing up purposes.

Would appreciate any help. Thanks.

You should have been doing that from new. The
failure rate isnt that related to age with hard drives.

Thats more complicated with Win2K because you cant move
an existing install to a completely new system very easily.
And you might find that say you end up with a system with XP
installed and might choose to move to that at the same time.

It can be done tho, normally using ghost or drive image.

I personally prefer to backup the stuff that is completely
irreplaceable to CDRs, and more than one CDR, and keep one
copy offsite, to protect against theft of the system or fire etc.

What comes with Win2K is quite adequate to do that with.

The full system backup can be done to CDRs too, using either
ghost or Drive Image. You wouldnt normally do the move to
a new system that way tho, tho you can if you want to.

Thank you very much Rod for the advice.

Further questions come to mind:

a) Between Drive Image and Ghost what is easier to use?
b) Am I right in thinking that if the whole system can be backed up
onto a CD, then it can be downloaded into a new HD and I will be
up and running like before?
c) If I were to upgrade to XP prof, will the new operating system
over ride the W2K and leave me with a XP Prof running all my old
programs etc? Or do I need to delete the W2K?

Thank you.

I personally think that Drive Image has a better user interface.

Yes, tho it may well take more than a single CD.

It should install over W2K.
