I have recently upgraded from 98se and am getting the
hang of Xp. But where is the backup utility? it isnt
under "system tools". it aint anywhere to be found, or is
it called something else these days? Any help would be
really appreciated, thanks.

It is on the CD and isn't install by default in XP HOME. Go
to Control Panel/ Add-Remove and the Windows components,
find and install back-up and anything else you want.

Hi Steve,

Windows XP Professional Edition and XP Home both ship with NTBackup. But
only XP Pro installs NTBackup by default. You can install NTBackup for XP
Home by performing the following steps:

Insert the XP Home CD-ROM.
Navigate to the VALUEADD\MSFT\NTBACKUP folder.
Double-click the ntbackup.msi file to install NTBackup.

For OEM Computers:

If the computer you purchased is an OEM (from Dell,Compaq etc), they might
not ship the Operating System CD. (only restore cds).
In that case, you can download ntbackup.msi from here:
http://www.onecomputerguy.com/software/ntbackup.msi

This article describes how to install Backup, which is included on the
CD-ROM in the Valueadd folder. To use Backup, you have to install it
manually.

.
I have just had to rely on this backup recently and it
let me down because if you have defragged then the files
may have moved so when you restore you have two sets of
files over lapping.
I now use partition magic and just copy my os partition
into another then I have two identical os's , they dont
have to be dual bootable but if they are then you can keep
things updated.
you can run the prog from dos with the rescue discs it
makes for you and you just delete the faulty os and copy
your backup into that partition and away you go.
