John

I use this facility every Sunday to backup my 2 hard drives but today it
refuses to work.

I am therefore unable to restore last week's backup to resolve the problem.

Can anyone offer me any suggestions as to how I can recover this invaluable
facility?

Thank you

John

You need to provide more information. Are you getting errors? What are the
errors? Are you backing up to another HD, a tape drive?

The only message I am getting is :

Backup Status

Operation: Backup

Active backup destination: File

Media name: "Backup.bkf created 07/12/2003 at 15:07"

Error returned while creating the volume shadow copy:80042301

Aborting Backup.

----------------------
The operation did not successfully complete.

I can use the built in backup facility in my accounts software which backs
up to the same USB2 drive.

I am afraid that I am not at all familiar with the workings of computers so
I hope this is the information you require.

Thanks

Hi,

There are at least three possible causes for this problem:

1) The COM+ Event System service was manually disabled (open
services.msc and,
if this is the case, re-enable this service). This service should be
enabled by default.

2) The Windows Setup encountered a problem. Just run "REG.EXE QUERY
HKLM\System\Setup". If any of the
SystemSetupInProgress/UpgradeInProgress is different than zero, then
you will get this message. To fix this issue in this case, please run
the two commands below:

REG ADD HKLM\system\setup /v SystemSetupInProgress /t REG_DWORD /d 0
/f
REG ADD HKLM\system\setup /v UpgradeInProgress /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f

Please let me know if the problem cannot be fixed with the steps
above.

3) An error happened during Windows setup. Can you look if there are
any VSS and COM+ errors in the Event Log? If yes, can you coy & paste
them in your reply?

Thanks, Adi

Forgive me but I am a complete novice when it comes to computers.

As you suggested I typed "REG.EXE QUERY HKLM\System\Setup" in the "Run" box
but the screen only blinked.

I am unsure as to how I follow the other steps you advised.

I have ascertained that I can run the Backup tool if I select to cancel the
Shadow Copying which is a feature contained withing the "Advanced" section
of the procedure to make a backup.

Now I did examine my services and located 2 services connected to shadow
copying :-

1 MS Software Shadow Copy Provider Service
2 Volume Shadow Copy

Service 2 is running "automatic" but service 1 refuses to start and displays
Error Code 1067.

I am now completely lost but perhaps this makes sense to someone technically
aware.

I found the event log and this is the only entry

Time: 4/27/2003 12:08:23.545
Type: Error
Category: 50
Event ID: 4609
The description for this event could not be found. It contains the following
insertion string(s):
d:\nt\com\com1x\src\events\tier1\eventsystemobj.cpp
44
80070013

I have also established that both the following services report Error Code
1067 and refuse to start

COM + System Application
MS Software Shadow Copy Provider

Does this help?

Don't run the command from the 'run' box it needs to be run from a command
console (DOS box lookalike)

at the run box type "cmd" (no quotes)
this should bring up a window that looks like an old DOS command window.
type in your reg.exe command here.

Hi John,

It looks like there is something wrong with the COM+ subsystem on your
machine. This might be caused by a problem during setup.

You might want to attempt to repair/reinstall the COM+ component.
Please follow KB 246499 for more details:

http://support.microsoft.com/defaul...port/kb/articles/q246/4/99.asp&NoWebContent=1

If this method doesn't work, the only other solution would be an
in-place upgrade of Windows. (but this requires a Windows CD).

Thanks, Adi
