Backup using ZipDisks

Susan

I have an office with 6 employees --- the last one in
the office at the end of the day does a backup of the
Access database using a zip-disk -- they take the backup
home with them in case of fire or theft.

Currently I have 3 employees who have backup disks (in
the event that 1 gets corrupted, lost, etc.)

My concern is with the lack of security (what if one of
the zipdisk gets lost/stolen ---- our company's data is on
there.

Does anyone have any other procedures for backing up
their data on a daily basis?

Thank you...

Susan,
The best thing you can probably do is to secure your database using Access
User Level security. Get a copy of the Security FAQ (there is a link to it
on the security page of my website). Read the document several times and
follow it TO THE LETTER. Don't skip a single step, or your data will not be
secure. Then, make a copy of the .mdw file that you create (or is created
for you by the wizard) and put it in a safe place. When your employees take
the backup disks with them, do NOT send the .mdw file with them -- Just the
..mdb or .mde. Then if someone steals a disk they will not be able to open
the database at all.

I'd just add: >write down< the values that you use when you create the new
Workgroup Information File for the secured database. Store those values as
well as, or even instead of, the actual workgroup file. Then, you can
recreate the workgroup file if the original & saved copies are both
destroyed.

HTH,
TC
