I've been using W2K network mixed mode for years. Now that
I am planning to promote another member-server to replace
the existing DC. But, I fear that bring me unexpected
disaster such as causing the damages of users'
information.

Can anyone tell where is backup folder, in which the user
information (such user ID and their Password) stored? So,
I can backup these important stuff beforehand.

Thanks!!

You should do a total backup and backup the System State which includes all the
pertinent info as described in the links below. To replace the DC, you might
consider dcpromoing the new server as an additional DC while the original DC is
still active and of course have it point to the original DC as it's dns server.
Dcpromo the new server and let it replicate with the old server for a while.
Then change the dns on the new DC to point to itself as it's dns server. Change
your existing W2K/XP Pro clients to point to the new DC as their dns server,
possibly changing dhcp scope if that is how they got that info. Run dcdiag on
the new DC to make sure everything is looking good and when you are confident
all is well including verifying all AD accounts exist on new DC dcpromo the old
DC which should transfer the fsmo roles over to the new DC. Make the new DC a
global catalog server and then decommission the old DC if you want, though it
makes a lot of sense to have at least two DC's. If you use EFS encryption in
your domain, the recovery agent certificate/key probably is on the original DC
so take that into account. --- Steve
