backup strategy: 60GB of MP3s to DVD

Ripping my CD collection to PC, I have 60GB and counting. In addition
to backing up to hard drive, I'm planning to keep two sets of DVDs,
shipped off to Chicago and DC. Right now I use Second Copy to mirror my
MP3s to a hard drive, which I love for that purpose. Is that the right
software for this purpose, which is going to require a lot of DVD
changing and several days to organize. Or should I be thinking about
something else?? Properly keeping up with incremental additions is
obviously the big issue. Any other bright ideas??? Thx.

I use Second Copy to back up MP3s and other files to a few hard
drives, and it's worked very well so far. Rather than use DVD, which
I just don't have the time or discipline to burn on a regular basis, I
back them up to a local external HD and to a networked HD located
elsewhere in the house.

I had 2 problems:

- Some time stamps being off by a few seconds between the original and
the copy for large files on the network HD, causing unnecessary
copying.

- I keep 1 revision of the old version of certain files, and the old
files were being copied rather than moved, which was very time
consuming on the network drive.

Both of these were fixed through the Hidden Options menu - see the
help file for info on this. Second Copy's tech support was extremely
helpful and responsive. I'm impressed with them and their product.

This wouldn't help in case of fire or meteor strike (you need your
offsite DVDs or HD for that), so I do DVD backups now and again, but
not of the MP3s.

In New York we don't worry about meteor strikes. We worry about nuclear
strikes and . chemical strikes. The kinda stuff that could keep you
from going back to your apartment for a while (maybe 1,000 years).
Gotta think ahead. :)

I'd just rip the CD collection to the hard drive, then once its all done,
move them to two DVDs each manually using Roxio EMC or Nero,
as data DVDs. And I'd use two different brands of DVD media too.

Oh, the two-brands suggestion is an excellent one. I just found a
limitation of Second Copy. Try to copy, say, 20 GB to DVD, it stalls
out after the first DVD gets full, but doesn't ask for a second one and
just stops.

Cant say I have ever used it. I normally do that stuff manually,
tho I might try True Image 9 for that once some of the more
obvious warts have been excised.

I bought True Image about 2 weeks ago. It said Win98 compatable.
Sure, it ran but stalled out. I was trying to back up 30+ gigs to an
external drive. I didn't know about the 4 gig file size limit of
FAT32 and Acronis didn't bother putting it in their manual. I am
getting a refund and looking for an alternative.

Instead of wasting your time on trying to get refund, get to know TI better.
What file size limit? TI splits image file in user definable chunks. I like
1490MB chunks; it fits three of them on one DVD, if I want to burn them
later.
TI stalled? Why didn't you create TI recovery CD and run your imaging after
booting off it?

Just get a later build from the Acronis web site.

It makes a lot more sense to just get a later build,
all the alternatives are even worse. Ghost 9 and
10 dont even support Win98 at all.

The support forum at http://www.wilderssecurity.com/forumdisplay.php?f=65
is very useful and has Acronis reps in there too.

I will look for that option. Thanks!

Creating a recovery CD did not work.

They emailed me a "patch". Didn't help.

A later build?? I just bought it 2 weeks ago. How many
new builds can ther possibly be?

I have found that with some builds I cant have
Roxio Drag to Disc or Nero InCD running, you have
to close them before it will create the recovery CD.

Is it my imagination or does Acronis support suck?

We got fed up with Ghost and True Image 9.0 made
a lot of pretty promises so we downloaded the 15
day trial version. We are very glad we didn't waste
our money on it. It froze up on install and there is
no uninstall. The one thing it MUST be is dependable
so we're back to Ghost, still waiting for something
better to come along.

Where did you buy it? If it was boxed it could have been sitting on the
shelf for years. It's only downloads direct from the manufacturer that can
be expected to be reasonably current, but even they aren't always--if
you've got fast broadband download the XP demo off the Microsoft site and
see how many patches it pulls down the first time you run Windows Update.

Not in my opinion. It aint perfect, but it doesnt suck.

Decent online forum with Acronis people in it too.

Oh bullshit. Its still a bit immature, 8 works fine tho.

Which is MUCH less dependable than TI.

More fool you. TI is much better than ghost.

TI is crap compare with WinPE + ghost32. You wan't get the same level of
device support as it is in some custom WinPE based solutions (BartPE,
UBCD4WIN). But that depends on host OS of course (assumed Windows platform).
I use TI for backing up Linux systems though.

Wrong, there's lots of capability missing with that, most
obviously incremental images and now non image backup too.

And the CD boots a hell of a lot faster too.

You dont get real time hot imaging either.

And that is completely ****ed.

Nope, imagers can drive the hardware directly.

I use TI for everything now.
