Could someone tell me of some backup strategies they use that are
effective? It seems like there's so many options. Tape, external hard
drive, SAN. What do you guys think is best?

In order to get a good answer you need to tell us much
more about your environment, requirements and constraints.
Solutions are priced from $150.00 to $50,000 and more.

Well, I have 2 servers. One server has a tape drive, but no drive
letter associated with it. Being new to tape drives (and administration
for that matter) I don't know if that's normal. I wanted to use that,
but others suggest cds or external hard drives.

In general, network-aware backup software does not assign a drive letter to
the tape. The software goes out to the other servers on the network and
"pulls" the data in. If the tape drive did not come with backup software,
or came with software that is not network-aware, you need to get software
that supports both your tape drive and network operations.

There are still several essential pieces of information
missing:
- How much data do you need to back up?
- What is the type and capacity of your tape drive?
- Are the servers connected via a network?
- Do you wish to use the tape drive for both servers?
- What backup software do you have for the tape drive?
(Why is it that I have to ask these trivial questions . . . )
