backup speed to SATA

Hi,

I am using Back Again II to backup a machine to a local SATA drive on a new
Promise controller. I'm only getting 100mb/min throughput. Can someone share
what kind of throughput you're getting, and why this is so low. My DDS-4 got
150. This is an NT4 server box.

Interesting. That's more or less what I got in DOS mode (Norton Ghost) trying to iomage a drive on a PATA card. It was much faster in windows - driver problem perhaps?

How long does it take to manually copy files across in windows?

What OS/boot environment?

The backup target is "local SATA on a new Promise". What is the source of
the backup connected how? Is the backup being compressed or not. If yes
then what processor?
Can someone share

NT4, my guess is that you might be using PIO mode rather than DMA mode for
either the source or destination.
 
I've not timed a good windows copy only procedure. I'll do that this evening
and post back. I'll grab a gig or two and see how long it takes.

I also use Ghost to image my C drives on 2 different servers, and on one I
write to a drive on the MoBo IDE controller - it gets about 150MB/min - and
on the other I write to a drive on a PATA controller and I get 360.

I've had around 1000MB/min (16MB/sec) using Ghost in Dos mode.

These were barracuda 160GB 7200 IDE PATAs.

I've not timed a good windows copy only procedure. I'll do that this evening

NT4SP6a. It's alone on the box. Boots right off C.

It backs up about 80% local stuff on MoBo IDE controllers, and maybe 20%
over mapped ethernet. Backup was compressed, so that might have affected it
some, but my DDS-4 was compressed too. The 150 mb/min on the DDS-4 was in
this exact same environment. The DDS-4 is on an adaptec SCSI bus tho'. The
processor is only a P3-500. But again - all else being equal the DDS-4
iscurrently doubling my SATA.

Can anyone share numbers you currently get on a SATA backup that are really
good?

Hmmm... maybe for the source, but not the SATA - but again, it seems it
shouldn't be that much slower than my DDS-4. The source is the same for both
SATA and the DDS-4 - the DDS-4 SCSI bus shouldn't be much faster than the
Promise SATA bus - maybe there are some settings on the Promise Card I need
to look at?

That's good and fast. My drive for saving gho files is only 5400 I think.

7200 are the ones that are too hot to touch!

That's good and fast. My drive for saving gho files is only 5400 I think.

NO, cool a drive sufficiently such that you can hold your hand on it for 30
seconds or it will DIE and early death.

Then they should come with decent cooling - how many PCs have you bought with coolers attached? CPUs come with heatsinks and fans, hard drives do not. You'd think they'd learn from all the returns....

Any decent case provides airflow over the 3.5 bays. You only need a breeze for
any IDE drive, not a fan.

Not usually. Standard tower case has intake at the bottom front, out at the top back. The drives are just above the front intake, hance missing the airflow.

The top of the HD bay gets plenty of airflow with an extra exhaust fan.

It works for my 15K Fuji MAM.

Just got some heatsinks for the drives! (AS I now have 4 250GB 7200rpms).
