I have been having problems with un-attended standalone
tape drive backup.

ERROR "The operation was not performed becasue no unused
media was available"

I have tried a couple of the fixes that is posted on the
web site but they do not seem to work.

1. already running service pack 4 - NTbackup.exe is the
correct version

2. added /UM to the end of the line in the batch file

3. had sevany.exe run as a service in the background

Is there just a hotfix I could get to correct the
problem ?

Could I use the NTbackup.exe from windows XP ?

Thanks

Travis

Hi Travis,

I'm not a subject expert by no means on NTBackup, but since no one has
answered then I'll give it my best efforts to help you in troubleshooting
this issue.

Is there just a hotfix I could get to correct the problem ?
[ANSWER] Have not seen anything newer than SP4.

Could I use the NTbackup.exe from windows XP ?
[ANSWER] Would not recommend it, since they are two totally different set
of binary trees.

Give these steps a try to see if it resolves your issue:

1. Rename the RSM database files (winnt\system32\NtmsData) to *. BAK.

2. Make the following registry entry :

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\NTMS

2a. Made a new DWORD value:

value name: ImportDatabase

data type: REG_DWORD

String: 1

3. Reboot server.

4. Go to the "Properties" of the disk inside the physical locations.

5. Unchecked 'Enable Drive'.

6. Hit Apply & then check the 'Enable Drive' again.

NOTE: This was done to reset the Flag, since we had renamed the database
for RSM.

7. Dismounted the tape.

8. Perform a full Inventory on the disk.

9. Now, the disk's state should say "Loaded, Available"

10. Try to run NTBackup.

11. You should get prompted "no unused media found", then you should get
the option to use the new available Tape.

12. Clicked Yes on it.

Then post back to the newsgroup if you were able to complete a backup
successfully or not.

I came up with a way to get around this issue, I created
a bat file to run the backup and used the windows
scheduler to schedule the backup rather that the
scheduler in NTbackup. This seems to work very well

Thanks
