Greets,

Now that Microsoft no longer provides any sort of backup/restore utility,
I'd
like to know what people are using. The two machines in need of something
are a WinXP-Home laptop and a WinXP-Pro desktop. Both are connected
to a LAN (100BaseT) and I prefer to backup to network shares.

Hi,

Microsoft supplies one, but many OEM dealers choose not to include it. This
is their choice, as they must support everything they include. You may wish
to contact them and inquire as to the availability of a copy of ntbackup.

Well, I have the green boxed "Windows XP Home Edition" and it does not
include ntbackup. Is that a XP Pro only only tool, or did Fry's request
that
MS produce a different upgrade CD for their boxed product?

FWIW the XP Pro I have on Yet Another Computer does have ntbackup.
I'm very, very disappointed with XP Home. It isn't "simpler", it's neutered
in
some pretty nasty ways.

The retail versions of XP, upgrade or full are all the same. If Fry's gave
you a retail version of XP Home Edition, go to the valueadd\msft\ntbackup
folder on the XP Home Edition cd and
install ntbackup manually by double clicking the file.

The above assumes Fry's provided you with a retail version or a
"comparable," OEM version. Proprietary versions which may or may not
include the tools are provided by the manufacturers and what is included is
entirely the option of the individual manufacturer.

Thanks -- that did the trick. I'll see about burning some DVD
backups tomorrow night or so.

Well ... they didn't "give" it to me, they charged me quite a huge chunk
of change for it ...

The MS tools that they use to make OEM disks have include the extra stuff unticked by default. Most computer manufacturers obviously don't read the dialog box but just click next, next.

Umm, might want to read this first:
