I'm getting ready to build my 2nd computer for Mom. I would like to install
some kind of backup/restore software on her PC so if she ever messes it up
she can just fix it. Also some sort of backup so that if something major
ever happens all I have to do is 're-load' her programs....So basically all
I need to know is what are some decent backup storage/restore
products....I've never backed up anything so don't know anything about it.

Well... WIndows XP's "restoration points" will cure if there are any
problems with new settings by putting back the settings of (say) the day
before.

This is only for settings tho - it won't recover lost documents and the
like. For that you'll have to get a program.

I know "Ghost" can makes snapshots of your HD, and save it as a complete
file to another HD or several CD's. I have no idea if Ghost can make
incremental back-ups tho.

Try Acronis True Image 7.0. I like it better than Norton ghost.

Acronis True Image is fast and VERY user friendly. It does more than
just backup your data, it takes a snapshot ghost image of your entire
hard drive. I've had to restore my system with this software and it's
SO fast. A 120GB drive restored in a few minutes -- perfect restoration
of all settings...you don't have to dink with any software settings etc,
just click the button and you restore everything. You can backup to CD
or your hard drive (it compresses the image so it doesn't take up a lot
of disk space). An nice setup when you build the computer is to put a
2nd drive in (it can be an old drive that's not so big or fast) and
backup to that. I do this and when I totally screw up my primary drive
I can VERY simply restore everything from the backup on the other drive.
This is MUCH better than the "rollback" feature on XP. The software
costs $49 and is the best investment I've ever made for computer
software. You can get the software here if your interested:

Hope this helps.

My exact experiance. I do it a bit different by doing a weekly backup
on 2 seperate hard drives in case one should go down as one I had
whose motor stopped. Up and 100% running in about 15-20 min.

I look at it as a more complete backup. It backs up every byte of
information on your drive so that when the need arises you can restore
EVERYTHING perfectly as it was without having to drag out any extra
software disks or reconfigure anything (even if you shuck the whole hard
drive you can buy a new drive and restore everything perfectly in
minutes) -- and it's so fast to backup or restore that it's convenient
and easy. I even use it on my Linux machine (In addition to my
Microsoft XP machine). It's always worked flawlessly. It's the best
$49 I've ever spent on software. I maintain computers for other family
members and I don't mind doing this, but I'm starting to ask that they
buy Acronis. This will save me countless (frustrating) hours trying to
reconstruct their drives when they screw things up (which they do from
time to time). Good luck.

I do it even on a spare HD which I keep it in another room & connect
it only for backUping; in case of fire, electrical surges, lightning
etc. If you have it connected inside machine to PSU & if lightning
strikes very close (happened to me with a TV set y ago) & kills
protection & PSU, there is very high probability that HD will die too

Yep! that's a good idea. I keep an image of my two computers, each of my two
kids and also my moms on one 250 gig USB external HD. You just plug it in
and BAM, away you go.

I would upgrade just for the image verification feature in ver 7. Have you
ever started a restore only to discover your image had become corrupt? I
have. Particularly with PQ Drive Image. When I read that they had added
the verification feature to Ver 7, I jumped right on it. As far as I was
concerned, the lack of verification was the only real shortcoming of Ver 6.
