I helped a friend backup his files to .bkf files, then we reinstalled his XP
Home. Backup/rstore is now missing and the .bkf files are the usual "generic"
icons. What have I missed? I thought Backup/Restore was a core part of the
Windows install... is it installed in another way?

NTBackup is not installed by default in XP Home. Install it from the
Value Added folder on your XP installation cd.

Backup must be installed separately. On my cd, it is in the "Value Add"
folder.
