I came across some old backup files of mine the other day. My current system
(W2K) + Nero isn't able to access them. I dragged out an old PC which I
thought had Win98 on it. It doesn't. I must have erased it before installing
NT4 on it. I am at least able to see that the backup file has a qic
extension. But when I try to run the Setup prog., I get the message "Simple
Restore: Unable to load language resources".

Have I got to re-install Win98 on this computer (which I'm told will wipe
out the existing two drive partition) in order to access the backup program
which can unwrap this?

Failing that, what else can I do to unwrap these files?

Thanks.

You will have to use Windows 98 or something like Veritas Backup
Executive or its Seagate predecessors. Just get yourself any old hard
drive and use it to install Windows 98 without disturbing your present
Windows installations. You can temporarily disconnect the good drive to
be certain that nothing will be changed, if you want to multi boot use a
third party boot manager.

Thank you for that. Just to be clear... Can I install Veritas Backup on my
W2K computer to do this job? And, if I need to, how do I disconnect my Drive
C? In the Bios?

Tim

Veritas "should" be able to do it but I can't confirm because I have
none of these .qic files to try. All version of Microsoft backup were
just scaled back versions of the then Seagate BackUp Executive. The old
BE could read these files so I would think that the Veritas versions
should also be able to do it too, one sure way to find out would be to
install the Veritas software and try it.

As for the Windows 98 drive, yes you could just turn the drive off in
the BIOS, or just pull the power connector from the drive itself, that
will ensure that no mistakes end up damaging the current installation.

This is becoming complicated.

On the old computer, I have a 30-giga hard drive. For some reason it has a
FAT partition of 2 gigas and 28 gigas have not been formated at all. I have
tried installing Windows 98 on the small partition, overwriting the NT4
installation, but it won't take because it says there is not enough space.
And I have tried all sorts of things to format the large space, but to no
avail.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

You can just format the small partition or use fdisk to delete and
recreate the partition then format it FAT32. You should be able to do
that by booting with the Windows 98 CD or download a Windows 98 boot
diskette from http://bootdisk.com/ . If you download a boot disk you
have to extract the files from the image that you download, just double
click the downloaded file and you will be prompted with instructions.

Windows 98 can install on 2GB without any problems, it doesn't have
enough space because NT4 is occupying the partition. You might be able
to save the NT4 installation by using fdisk to create a primary
partition in the unallocated space and changing the active flag from the
NT4 partition to the partition on which you want to install.

I take it that the Veritas software couldn't read the file from within a
Windows 2000 installation?

Oh, I forgot, quite possibly or most probably the 28GB that is shown as
not formated might be an NTFS partition that Windows 98 can't see. If
you are satisfied that there is nothing of value on it delete the
partition and create a new one. If fdisk can't delete the partition try
using delpart: http://russelltexas.com/delpart.htm
